C是整个句子的状语

so指代report high marital satisfaction, 就是说退休后换新工作的人比起完全退休的人来说，要更多地report marital satisfaction。同时，比较也只能两类人来比，不能用when。用when的话，表示同一类人，不同的情况，这是逻辑错误，因为一个人要不完全退休，要不换别的新工作，两者mutually exclusive。

楼上的你说的so的替代我也想过,但如果按那样还原(如上),那两个句字之间明显没有连词,不就形成了fragment~

难道是应该还原成more reporting high marital satisfaction than those who retired

我说的那个只是句子意思上是这样。

你要代回原句的话，so在这里解作"in this way"，代回去就变成，...., more in this way than those....

另外一个例句，The pillars, which are outside the building, are so placed in order to provide the maximum space inside.

so意思上是指代outside the building,但是你把这个代回去，句子也fragment，但是把in this way代回去就通了。
