In recent years cattle breeders have increasingly used crossbreeding,  in part that their steers should accquire certain characteristics and partly because crossbreeding is said to provide hybrid vigor.

A. 原文
B. in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics
C. partly because of their steers acquiring certain characteristics
D. partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers
E. partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steeers.


根据平行结构原则，为何不选D，即 in recent years cattle breeders have increased used ... , partly because ..... + 句子 and partly because .... + 句子。这样不是结构不是很完美吗。

D:不选的原因，应该是certain characteristics 被acquired by their steers，逻辑不合理吧

E:  partly (because crossbreeding is said) to acquire certain charateristics in their steers and partly because crossbreeding is said to provide hybrid vigor.

我觉得前面 省略了相同的主谓。形式对称, 内容:前半句表目的,后半句表原因.

这只是种想法，待nn指教

牛杂交，然后一种牛的certain characteristic 被acquired by 另一种牛所acquired，这样去想好像没什么问题呀。刚一看楼上的解释把steers理解成breeders了，如果是acquired by breeders，那很明显是错误，但后来 一看是steers，觉得似乎没什么问题。楼上不知也没有看错吧。GMAT看来不象TOFLE,有些题甚至不需要理解具体每个词的意思，但是GMAT每个词的理解似乎不可忽略。

今天做题做得都想吐了，大脑似乎已经转不动了。nn 看到请别见笑。 大家多指教。

D. partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers

原句中的their指代cattle breeders，D中指代了characteristics;另外用了被动语态没有主动语态好。

Choice E is best; it best indicates purpose for crossbreeding—partly to acquire. In A, in part that does not grammatically connect the underlined portion to the first part of the sentence (the independent clause). In both A and B, in part
            is not parallel with and
                partly in the non-underlined portion. Choice C causes a misreading, suggesting that the steers’ acquisition has caused the crossbreeding. D awkwardly and illogically shifts to the passive voice: certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers;) the steers, however, are not agents in the acquisition.

此题突出显示了GMAT SC的变态，不过很经典。

同意同意！ETS果然很无聊，我一直在思考从语法上讲：partly to do 怎么和partly because 并列，翻了很多语法书上都没有这样的解释。这题只能从逻辑上去解释，不能硬扣语法。看来果真是意思、逻辑最重要
！
