Luckily got into HBS too in R1!
Brief background info if useful:
9 years living experience in Tokyo; decent university; c. 3 years investment banking; G 750; T 111
Some key takeaways to share with you:
GMAT: totally relied on the Jijin and Jinhua etc on CD. Million thanks to all the people who contributed online
Essays: Try to get people who know you best to take a look. It is good to get a counselor (better be native who is professional) too, but donot allow them to change the wording too much as it will lose your own "flavor". Focus on how to present the idea / story in a way that can even make yourself feel THRILLED and have the scenes popping up in your mind vividly every time you read it.
Interview: The Qs HBS interviewer asked were quite experience specific. It feels more like they are trying to verify the your application content with you. Be ready to answer "leadership experience" , "why MBA now", "the biggest challenge after admission". Btw, they did not ask why Harvard. Top school ego? maybe...
Anyway, I was lucky. As you would expect, these schools have a large number of highly qualified applicants and it's often very difficult to separate them. As a consequence, it can become virtually a "roll of the dice" --an arbitrary decision--that determines who is admitted and who is not.
So message to all the applicants who are chasing dreams now: keep up your good works and you will be rewarded in many ways!
