标题: 美国经济衰败会不会影响给学生funding
听说美国经济正在走下坡路,不知道将来会不会减少在读学生的funding,教授和学生大幅度裁减
历史上有这样的情况么

economic downturn -> market is down -> industry demand is low -> academia demand is low, too. therefore, i would worry about job markets(both industry and academia) in US more than the funding.

While US PhD will not depreciate, we can take our PhD degrees and find a job in better marekts, for example, Hong Kong.

right, but if the institutions dont have enough funding, we would probably not be able to finish the program and granted degrees, ones that don't depreciate across different job markets...
I guess you guys are graduating in one or two years, while I just started out my PhD,that's why we have different concerns:>
it also depends on how soon the depression is coming and how sever it can be...
just feel bored this break and come up with this question

I just started my PhD as well. You do concern too much. I don't think the US economy is so fragile that it would be really paralysed by current recession in the near future. If anything should be done, it's the government who needs to fix it. Besides, I don't think the recession will cause the business school to stop funding. After all, business schools are the most affluent in universities, if they stop providing stipend, I really doubt that all the other departments could still afford their PhD students.
In worst scenario, if the world would nonetheless fall into recession, business phd students are for sure not the only one to suffer, or suffer the most. Besides, according to the chain analysis above, don't forget that each step has a lag, thus even if you would not graduate soon, you still can complete your study with stipend provided for two or three more years.

yes, i am in my third year and what's why i start to worry about. we phd students are very cheap (but smart, hopefully, on the other hand) working animials. therefore, funding is not a big issue at all even if we were in a big economic recession.

sweet!
but it seems that you trust the government too much. They are supposed to fix everything, but apparently they haven't,lol
by the way, the cost of running a PhD business program is way too high...that's one of the reasons why business programs are small compared to others, and why some prestigious institions don't have PhD programs in business. And it's possible that in some situations, people would not choose to go to MBA program, and then the country would shrink the business PhD programs, and use the funding to support science majors...But yeah, it wouldn't affect us that much at this point...

Sometimes, those working people will consider to take an advanced degree when the economy is doom. The competition may be more harsh.

the decrease in the chance of getting funding is different from the decrease in the level of funding.
