Dear all,

We are 07’ students of Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB) and hereby glad to announce the debut of our Class Diary on CD.

As stated in our internal “Proclamation for Initiation of Class Diary Project”, we are conducting this diary project in part to “Benefit the community (the group of people who are searching for a serious business school in Mainland China), CKGSB and ourselves.” That’s why we would like to post our diary here on a weekly basis to give you a factual perspective to look into a real MBA life.

Even though we have just set off from the starting line, we are clear that one year is very short, or rather “too short” for us who have got to know how valuable it is!

Therefore, we take diary as one way to record our life during the year and to share with you about our feelings and opinions.

Throughout the years, CD has been witnessing so much resolution from people who are chasing their dreams. Likewise, we are in the belief that, upon the realization of our small dreams, the big dreams of China will come true undoubtedly!

Cheers!

CKMBA 07

<1st week> Hereunder presented by Jeff Li:

Hereunder you may see my first diary in CKGSB to initiate the Class Diary Project. It recorded the first football game of our class involving two brothers from MBA Class06, and some of my football playing experience as well. I shall admit that I really enjoy the happiness and friendship sports brought to me. It is also good to meet so many guys who like sports and live with CK. Let us study together, have sports together and be friends forever!

<2nd week> Presented by Michael Chen:

Some brothers once said that you can never over-praise the prof. of CK. It may appear a little bit exaggerated at the first glance, but now I realize it is true.

Prof. Cao was the genius of Juvenile Class in his college year, he got his finance PHD in YALE university combined with a PHD in biology. After that, he acted as professor of finance in many world famous universities.

It is generally thought that people with high IQ will have low EQ as a tradeoff, but the surprise I got from his answer to my question during his speech changed my impression. My question was how to transfer to a finance career successfully. He said the question was typical and he would respond in later public Q&A. While in the public Q&A, some other guys asked the same question as mine. After the Q&A session, I stepped out of the lecture Hall with the prof. and the prof. saw me, he asked me "so, are you satisfied with my answers?" Very surprised to me! The prof. can easily remember the name of the last one who ask question and can easily cite the guy's words!

Then I realized that prof. Cao is a man with independent thinking. When he answered each question, he always tried to be very innovative, unique and helpful. He also occupies the quality of intelligence, academic seriousness and sense of humor. Communication with him is really enjoyable.

<3rd week> Presented by Jostar Wu:

CKGSB --MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE。
Strengthen yourself first and after use your ability to help others。
ABC(Appreciate Benefit Contribution)的文化深入人心。

What is your viewpoint here? Totally NO VALUE for MBA applicants!!

then tell me what value added for mba applicants by this kind of bluffing? I just feel it is no more than narcissiam, but it is really funny.

i have no bias for any b school, but now i really develop a feeling of CKGSB. as suggestion, I really hope you guys can demostrate your real talent to promote the school by using your head, thinking on your feet.

by the way, I just have a chance to talk to a top leader of global 500 company, can i say that is the glory shared by all chinese people?

You can address any points here. However, do you think your sentences are very nice for those CKGSB supporters? This kind of understanding such as I have no bias for any b school, it would be much better. Do you agree?

I certainly understand your personl loyalty to the school you attend, I had just been seeing a scenario of Cultural Revolution style of propaganda. value add? value destroy.

anyway, i don't think anyone  will take your propaganda seriously, while career report and word of mouth from  close alumni will be taken serious. the best strategy to gain market reputation is to tell the truth even outsiders don't know yet. To this end, i really doubt your course quality, especially strategy and marketing, you really don't get the sense of that subject, maybe that is the reason why you guys cannot get your feet in Mckinsey.

one thing shared by all IBers and consultants is always get to the point, never waste your time in non-fact based things. if i come out with any trivial sentence in pitch book, the direct response is "nonsense, you get 2minutes left", so try hard to cool your mind and sharpen your knife, communication skill and presentation is more than speaking.

It is very likely that 2007 CK MBA students have not yet started Strategy and Marketing classes so far.

CK MBA candidates may try to prove something, but should not make believe, otherwise you may brag

<4th week> Presented by Eric Cen:

Learn from classmates

When I was downloading some files from internet after 9 o’clock, Jeff and Michael in the same lecture room just began a discussion about the entrepreneurship. I found that was very interesting and posed my questions to Michael.
“Is the team very important at the very beginning?”
“Not that much, just like dating with a girl, you may not know her very deep unless you get together with her for a long time, observe and find her heart in some tough period.”
“How did you begin your journey of running your own company?”
“Actually it is not planned well before the start. When I worked in a company whose situation was not so good, one of my customers asked ‘why don’t you start up your own company’, and then some colleagues with same ideas got together and began our venture.”
“What is the reason you left the company to come here for study?”
“I found that there is some bottleneck when my company had 20 people and some revenue, I want to learn more, both knowledge and skills, to lead my company further”

As the time was close to 21:25, we packed our stuff and went back dorm. The most important point of the discussion for me is the worry I have on entrepreneurship. I always want to wait the perfect time that everything is ready, just as some of my friends do. I know it is somewhat wrong, but never change myself. I don’t like to use the money from my family. Moreover, I came to realize that, using other people’s money is a skill necessary in the business world and a kind of route to achieve a win-win situation. I got the right information about the investment; I have the access to certain amount of money, why should I choose to give up lots of chances to earn money easily?
I think learning from classmates is very important, as well as learning from professors and books. This conversation is a good start of my MBA study, I believe.

<5th week> Presented by Lynn Cao:

Last Day of ME:

I had never expected the first month studying in CK would just change my way of learning and thinking from ME course, though not totally. I still can clearly recall some assignments that I just can't figure out where to start to analyze, totally in the dark. It's so miserable that my confidence in study for years suddenly disappeared! Am I such a fool that have no idea even at the beginning of the first module? Even more confusing is that the professor said there were no wrong or right answer for some problems, it depends on some factors, but not exhaustive factors. Books just don't help you there in solving problems effectively sometimes. How could I survive from ME, strong concerns and worry overwhelmed me.

The professors' response to this common complaint was opening the new world to me. “That's what the real world looks like, full of uncertainty. When asked of what is the most difficulty, 90% of Chinese company leaders I encountered in the past four years said the same thing—insufficient business leaders that can initiate to perceive the problem and framework the solution. I hope you guys will be the leaders comfortable with dealing with uncertainties in the real world. …”

With the traditional deductive way of learning, we (Chinese students) are used to be given the clear instructions of the problems, no data will be wasted, no ambiguous answers, otherwise, you will be proven wrong or bad performance in your exam. However, the professor's intentional effort in pushing us out of comport zone gradually takes effect. His inductive instructing started to make a profound change in our mindset and framework of thinking, and received a tremendous applause for efficiency in learning experience.

Professor Brian is a paradox himself to me. This humble person always in smile is perceived by me as one of the nicest professors I've ever met, he is very patient to answer questions and refund or sponsor our games in game theory class. On the other hand, he's also the one I feared most of being cold called, and I spent most time in my prep for ME assignments. How come warmth and demandingness are integrated into one person?

When the clock ticks approaching 12:00, the professor delivered a ten-minute briefing of ME key contents for the whole class. The first thing we should remember is the supply and demand curve and what factors cause shifts or movement along the curve, etc. And “read the newspaper”, “ I hope each time you read a newspaper, you have a similar habit with me that you intuitively think about what this news will lead to in the price and quantity demanded. “ Suddenly moved by his kindness, the last ten minutes made me feel like a departure sentiments. The whole class came very silent in listening professors' briefing. All the previous well-selected real-world cases by professor were reminded one by one.“That's all, thank you.” I was surprised to find out my classmates and me unconsciously stood up from seats nearly at same time and applaused for long in great gratitude.

I'm feeling so lucky to be able to meet such a caring and excellent professor in my life, I know it will definitely change my life somehow, and I'm happy to know we'll have another class from him. It's not an ending, it just begins.

<6th week> Presented by Rick Wang:

The "Classroom Economics":

Ck07's classroom is becoming hotter and hotter everyday. Everyone wants to be an active class participator, but behind that scene what is the economics principal which is relevant to human behavior or how to maximize everyone's benefit?
Before enter the class room, professor v had never anticipated such a big applause which although not in good order but can be perceived as delicately designed. What shocked him further is that when he throws a question, there are so many hands rising fiercely into the air which made him more an American idol candidate facing his fans than a professor in the business school.
The grading rule for the course is that 25% of the final score is based on class participation. He planned to give each one 2 points on answer one question.
Now i might have to lower the points, a slight sense of guilty arose when he came up with that thought. Indeed there are really too many candidates every time even slow his teaching schedule.
the students, a group of energetic, ambitious, aggressive young man want to show themselves, give positive feedback to the professor and get the grade on class participation.
Question: do you think the students' actions can bring what they want?

Please draw the supply/demand curve under situation (suppose professor suppler of grade and students’ demand of grade) and to what extent the students' behavior will impact the movement of demand curve thus effect the equilibrium price.
Use game theory to explain what is the best maneuver for students.

how cold call will effect the market?

<7th week> Presented by Gary Lu:

Christmas Party

Although postponed once due to the sudden break between Module 1 and Module 2, our Christmas Party was staged successfully on December 21 in the White~~House, not Palace, for sure. Luckily, the incidence did not lower our expectation for the first-time whole family gathering in any way, on the contrary, with the approaching of the Christmas Day and the bell ringing of the New Year we were more in the mood for the once-a-year event.

Just have a quick review of the four hours, as we did repeatedly before each class over the previous take-away’s, we moved quickly from the buffet to the performance & game session.

As expected, we saw Dean Zheng and Professor Yan come with the full staff team. They also brought some thoughtful performances and participated actively in our games. Some of our classmates brought their “other-half”s in, which made the party more family-bounded.

Given the constraint of the limited time in preparing all the performances, we still witnessed a lot of laugh-evoking pieces, most of them were dancing lot! It was true that all the programs were far from professional, but it was also explicit that we were not beaten short of creativity and passion: cute, compassionate, hot & sexy—you really can’t categorize the different types of dancing into one group. The trade marks of some of our professors were also skillfully exhibited by our classmates: “Do you know who I am?” “Are you with me?” I believe this terms will be on our tongue over and over again.

If you ask me, I would say it was not easy to recognize a lot of our classmates this night since they were so different from the normal, both in terms of their appearance and behavior. Crazy? Maybe not—we still have sufficient space to use.

Coincidence or not, today is also Xiaopeng’s birthday and also we have a lot of classmates having their birthdays in December. Therefore when the birthday cake was put on the table, the peak time arrived. In contrast with the chilly drizzling evening outside, the room inside was filled by an emotion of radiating relaxation and zero-distance mutual appreciation.

Too many memorable things! We also heard the new year’s blessings presented in different languages by our international students.

It was an interesting feeling that some of the professor’ words given earlier this day in the first OB (Organizational Behavior) class were still echoing in my mind, which was an ordinary state when I typically reflect on the course cores, I was at the same time in the center of a celebration storm.

Let’s embrace a bright and fruitful new year!

<8th week> Presented by Myron Xu:

<9th week> Presented by Sophia Xiao:

Team Members

跟大家分享一下: Stephen在清华学的是理工,但他在数学和金融的水平似乎更高,很早以前就有领教。这一次和他分在一组做marketing和finance,才近距离地接触了这个天才:无论多么复杂的案例,也不管其中所用模型如何高深,都可以交给他。最多十几分钟,附有excel的email就到了,还免费赠送耐心细致的讲解多份-------呵呵,由于我们和天才的距离,通常需要他多讲两遍;

Ignitius, another genius! He worked as a senior consultant in Korean for many years. He is always quiet in discussion, but once there is his voice, his sharp, specific and clear point must be that one on the final version. Powerpoint to him is basketball to Michael Jordan. No words than “professional” can be better for him! Also, he is a very respectable speaker at presentations.

老头每节课前都要讲讲what's new today?

Prof. Yan!

<12th week> hasal Comma
Dear CDers:
Since our Intra-module break starts tomorrow and will last for three weeks till mid-
February and most of our classmates will leave Shanghai, our Class Diary will have a temporary suspension during the period and is expected to resume on Feb. 23.
Thanks for all you attention and support on us during the past four months and we will see
you again in the Chinese New Year.
Sincere wishes to you for a bright and prosperous new year and an advanced blessing for a
happy Spring Festival!

Compared with the beginning of Module 2, the past two weeks are easy or even enjoyable for
us. With the return of Professor Viard, we are recharged and motivated to strive for the
end of this module.
In the last few days, "go home" has dominated our extra-curriculum chat and made the final
exam of Business strategy somewhat different from that of previous courses--distraction? maybe. We really need some refreshment and reflection after the 2 compact modules. This morning when I was sitting in the multi-function room doing the exam, I had such an impulse
to put down my pen and try to inscript the moment which will soon go away from my grasp.
Then the surprise gift came: we were treated a snow show at the conclusion of the exam. What
a rare chance it is! I bet all of our classmates will spare a place in our memory for the special day, the special scene and the special gathering at Qianxiangge restaurant--a
celebration for our phasal comma and a joint wave to the coming challenges.

New Module Starts-Looking back for Moving forward

Facts behind the business school
After long spring festival vacation, we come back to the campus again for module 3. Having spent 4 months in CKGSB, gradually, i get to know more and more about this CK --- the culture here, the people here, and soul and spirits behind this name.
Professors and Courses:
Still remember at the openning ceremony last November, dean Zheng told us, CKMBA program is not simply a training program for professional managers, in fact the school is aiming to build future business generals - we are the "west point" in business schools. You won't easily get the point until you start to take courses here. In average, we have to finish one course every 1-2 weeks. Each course is designed intensely and given by pronowned professors. The faculty team here is probably one of the most compentent teams in China. Though the courses are not lasting long, the requirement are as strict as those courses given in 2 years MBA program in North America. So it is not difficult to imagine the workload we have experienced in the class, it's quite common that after we spent whole day in classroom, there are another 1 or 2 assignments or case studies are waiting for us in the night. And usually there are no weekend in CKGSB since we have to catch up with readings or big group write-ups. After module 1 and module 2, I believe what I learned here is not only course knowledge, but also the way to keep up yourself in fierce schedule and environment. I believe this is the spirit CKGSB want to root into our deep heart!
Alumni and Staff:
One of most precious assets of CKGSB is our alumni and staff. Once you joined CKGSB, you will have a bond with school even after your graduation. This is a truly family. Every 1-2 months we have a family day and alumni are invited to come back to campus to share experience, to exchange minds and to meet old/new friends here. During CKGSB info sessions you can always find alumni actively show up. And it is not rare when CKGSB MBA program would like to make big decisions, all alumni are invited to contribute their ideas and to join the decision making process. The most recent alumni meeting was held about 1 month before and most past graduate MBAs come to Shanghai campus and Beijing campus to join the TV conference to discuss some critical factors about CKMBA programs.
Behind the MBA program, we have a very competent staff team supporting this platform. From the very beginning when we were still in the MBA applying procedure, the recruiting staff team are so supportive that we were deeply impressed. After we join CK family, we notice that the whole staff culture here is open and transparent. There are regular communication meetings between staff and us and each week there is open office hour from program director, in short, we have various channels to exchange opinions about the program. Communication is one facet, the most important thing is that we feel our opinions are respected. Immediate response and follow up action plans can be expected here.
Business school is an exciting place for me to grow. Yet there is still long time to come, I'm expected to explore more here, in CKGSB.

Collect some past thoughts

Albert…

<19th week> A clip from Class Journal, a glimpse of school life:

"Dear All,
I was informed by Cypress hotel of this information yesterday and we’re trying to negotiate with them.
Actually, not just the swimming pool, but many other entertainments from the club are all priced up.
As far as swimming pool, the reason they gave us was because, this is a constant temperature swimming pool; and they need to burn a kind of oil to keep the temperature; and the price of the oil is doubled; that’s why they need to raise the price.
Attached please see the price they’ve provided to us and I will let you all know the negotiation process.
Best regards,
Jessie.Ma

Dear Jessie,
CKGSB’s study is very intensive, swimming, as well as tennis and badminton is almost the only sports activity for many of our MBA students (more than half of our classmates frequently go swimming) to build up their bodies.
Since there is a long term agreement between CKGSB and Cypress hotel, it should be negotiable for this price issue.
On the other hand, the increasing of the cost is not so big as they charged for us (117% sharp increase), why do not negotiate to a feasible price such as RMB 30 (even this price is still 30% increase)?
Hope we could find a way to solve this problem.
Johnny

Dear all,
Thank you all very much for your good advices and ideas on this issue!
I totally agree with all and I understand how important this kind of facility is for all of you and our school.
Please trust us we’re going to use all the resource we can to negotiate with Cypress hotel; besides we’ve got support from our school for us to do this negotiation too!
So, please hand over this task to us so that you can have enough energy focus on your study. We will keep you updated on this issue within this week and give everybody a solution!
Thank you very much for your understanding!
Jessie.Ma

Dear all,
It’s my great pleasure to show our appreciation on behalf of all Cheung Kong Ladies!
Thank you so much for your gift and you guys have lit up our holiday!!
Meanwhile, we’d like to wish every lady in your class a happy holiday!

<20th week> Presented by Gary Lu:

Group Project with Cornell students

Cornell projects started on Mar. 17 with a pleasant 13 member team of Cornell Johnson school MBA students joining us. A bit surprise that the majority of them are of Indian origin. This is another evidence that how India has impressed the world and immerged into the mainstream of the Western world, especially the US. We spent roughly one and a half days together to work on a case talking about the current hot issue of the legal dispute between Danone and Wahaha and it turned out to be a quite enjoyable experience. There was not much information given by the case material, therefore we need to figure out what’s behind the phenomenon by ourselves. Info search is of course the fundamental work but how to deduce the logic and map out the storyline is really a challenge. And the Cornell students won our respect by asking to-the-point questions and stay cooperative on the road of seeking the truth.

Of course, we didn’t just get stuck on the case. Actually we had a very nice talk with them. The two students in our team: Jasy from India and Sheraf from Pakistan are both open-minded and sharp-minded. During the case analysis, I find they would keep pushing themselves until they think they’ve got some solid recommendations that they would feel comfortable to defend. Besides this case, we openly exchanged our view on how we look at each other and the countries of China, India and Pakistan. Taiwan is part of the topic because they don’t quite understand the tension between Mainland China and Taiwan. Also Jasy raised a very good point that India is ahead of China in globalization because its language advantage but China is now putting more efforts in the language education while India did little to improve its infrastructure so the gap will be narrowed in the near future. A modest complement; however, we ourselves should think about this issue critically. Do not misunderstand that China is in an advantageous position in the competition with India.

The final presentation turned out to be a “watch-tour” since I admired the way they presented themselves. Anyway, this joint activity seems to make more sense than simply dining together. Btw, hang-out together is also a good choice. Tonight six of us accompanied six Cornell students to have a happy dinner at the Jade Garden and then settled down in a bar on the Hengshan Road. They were having fun with us given the really good meal and when we were in a bar, they were quite delighted in taking photos of each other with funny gestures.

<22th week> Presented by Sophia Xiao:

1. 东亚银行VP的‘外资银行在中国的发展’,很真诚,也很成功;起码我这个不打算去银行的人对行业也有了挺好的了解,他给的择业建议‘可以考虑将要改制的企业,无论新外资,大国资,还是好民企’有些建设性;
2. 万科VP的企业和行业分析,对这个行业有了些新认识。作为行业里的老大,万科的责任感很强,这是企业的难能可贵之处。可惜我问的三个问题,回答得不是很实质;当然,国内企业能常去哈佛、沃顿开招聘会的还是不多;
1. 德尔福(苏州)工厂。他们对这类公关活动的重视程度可以联想地思考到他在行业里地位下滑的原因;另一路去了AMD和Spansion的同学好像收获不少;
4. BioBay纳米科技园。那里有深圳和浦东都比拟不了的建设速度! 那位女士,后来我才知道是他们的总经理,确有很多值得我们佩服的气质和能力;
1. Exchange program的面试。用5分钟决定下来的印度,还是有很多魅力;
2. An dinner appointment, 和一位正准备创业的朋友一起审议他的商业计划书;

<24th week> Presented by Myron Xu:

When the call comes, we will show up
