castigate,               lowbrow,                        snobbery,                  digression,                         emancipation

patina,                     reprehensible,                       stifle,                           condescending,                                fastidious

 blight,                                 deseration,                                                exude,                              convolve,                       despoliation

I know no words. So I look for them and get sth. cules for me to remember them.

castigate: to subject to severe punishment, reproof, or criticism/felony

lowbrow/ no taste

lame duck (I don't why)

digression /solitary

emancipation / free

patina, a surface appearance of something grown beautiful especially with age or use/ kind of antique ( Actually, I don't think this word will be key word influenting reading.)

flout

probably from Middle English flouten to play the flute, from floute flute

If you flout something such as a law, or an accepted way of behaving, you deliberately do not obey it or follow it.

Building regulations have been habitually flouted.

folly

foolish, from Anglo-French, from fol fool

It's sheer folly to build nuclear power station in a country that has dozens of earthquakes every year.

if something foreshadows an event or situation, it suggestes that it will happen.

The disppointing sales figures foreshadow more redundancies.

The kind of living was beginning to fray her nerves.

is fraying at the edges, is fraying around the edges, means  that it has an uncertain or unsteady quality.

frigid,

extremely cold, difficult to become sexually aroused, very fromal and unfriendly.

A truely great work of literature should place damands upon its readers, rather than divert them.

A truely great work of literature should place damands upon its readers, rather than divert them.
