意思就是说insuits were isolated from contact with Europeans longer than Aleuts or Insuits of *** were(倒装了) isolated from contact with Europeans (这些都省略了)

如果不加were的话,就不知道到底是

insuits of the bering sea were isolated from contact with Europeans longer than Aleuts or Insuits of *** were isolated from ...

还是

Insuits of the bering sea were isolated from contact with europeans longer than insuits of the bering sea were isolated from contact with Aleuts or Insuits of ***
