在尼安德特人遗址上发掘出土的一根骨头碎片上找到4个洞（骨头是做笛子用的）正好符合mi fa so la,也就是全音阶中的4个，所以乐器专家认为，全音阶这种乐谱表示法被西方文明（从文艺复兴算起）采用之前，早已经存在千年之久了。
