There is a widespread belief in the United States and Western Europe that young people have a smaller commitment to work and a career than their parents and grandparents and that the source of the change lies in the collapse of the "work ethic."

D,想问一下had 改did行不行?当初就是觉得用had 奇怪才没选的,因为have 在这里是实意动词,比较的时候不是应该用do did之类的代替吗?请指教

好吧，那我先来说一下我的想法

比较对象是young people和their parents and grandparents
(A) (B) (C)如果没有补出助动词，无法看出到底是主格相比还是受格相比，砍

(E)Lessening是分词作形容词用，原形是lessen(V) (=reduce) to become smaller in size, importance, or value, or make something do this，和less意思不同，改变句意

(D)中使用had表示过去时间，句意是：”现在” young people have less of a commitment to work and a career和”过去” their parents and grandparents had have less of a commitment to work and a career相比

请问这样理解对吗?

可是less后面应该是加不可数名词吧？赐教。。

这题其实换几个词就是这样的一个句子：

I have less money than my parents had in the old days.

按lz的意思就变成了 I have less money than my parents did in the old days.

这样看似乎do不能替换have

按5楼的意思就变成了 I have less money than my parents had have in the old days.

这里不需要用完成时，一般过去时以区分现在和过去就可以了

按ls的意思就变成了 I have less money than that of my parents in the old days.

从题目中看不出来比较物是哪2个

如果比较物是i和my parents，那么就不对，必须对称，要像最上面的句子一样。

如果比较物是money，那么c看似就对。可是，而c错在smaller上面。

为什么呢？顺便尝试解答一下7楼的问题:“请教less of a commitment to a career ,这里的less是little的比较级吗？可是less后面应该是加不可数名词吧？赐教。"

这里正是要不可数的修饰词. 这里不是比较双方谁的commitment多（不是在数量上的比较），不是说我有3个commitment，我父母有5个，而是在比较commitment的程度，。所以不用smaller用less。

请指教。

为什么这里补出的是had而不是did呢?

less of 在这里是作为副词修饰动词have的，表示较小程度上，Young people 与parents 相比较小程度的有那种commitment.
在白勇语法中，less of 作为固定搭配修饰动词表程度。
如下题：

Because natural gas is composed mostly of methane, a simple hydrocarbon, vehicles powered by natural gas emit less of certain pollutants than the burning of gasoline or diesel fuel.

B. fewer of certain pollutants than buring of gasoline or disel fuel
C. less of certain pollutants than gasoline or diesel fuel
