twice the number 有这种用法吗，不是double才有这种用法吗．

"those" is not clear and can be ambiguous. Moreover, cannot use "as much as" but "as many as" to modify a countable noun.

你是想比吸烟的人数吧，those 只能指 young people了，可是这么多年了，总人口变了吧，所以这个两倍的意思不一定啊

原文是要比吸烟的比例，77年是10％，79年就是 20％了，number 就是指这个10％了
twice + 名词是标准的两倍表达方法
