9.Baker was perhaps not the most gifted soloist in the orchestra, but the conductor felt what was lacking in his technical skill was more than made up by the passion with which he played the music.
(A) what was lacking in his technical skill was more than made up by
(B) what he lacked in technical skill was more than made up by
(C) whatever was lacking in his technical skill was more than made up by
(D) whatever he lacked in technical skill was more than made up for by
(E) whatever he lacked in technical skill he more than made up by
ans:B
为什么不选D, make up for是弥补的意思,make up为化妆, B中made up by……
D is the right answer

如果没有前半句的 the most gifted soloist 做铺垫,选 B

2、make up语义太杂,不如 make up for 清楚单纯

what 不表示 Baker啊,what was lacking in his technical skill 指他技艺上缺乏的,只是what引导的名词性从句,what引导的内容是后面的was lacking in his technical skill,而不是Baker

新概念第四册关于oxford那篇文章里就有一句很好的例子:“And now benefactions and research endowments can MAKE UP FOR the change in character which the university has suffered”

i recommend choice D. the whole sentence means Baker was not the best player and he lacked technical skills, but he could make up for whatever technical skills he lacked with the passion has had.  "make up for" is cruciousl for this one
但是一看make up for有觉得应选D。

而且我一开始没有看make up (for)的意思,觉得what (定语)be...

whatever=no matter what

此题,我选了D,但大全给的答案是B;

Longman中只有make up for 有more than make up for 的用法:

The good days more than make up for the bad ones.而make up 则无此用法。

I think B is better.  The first part of the sentence clearly indicates that Baker doeslack some technical skills.  In thiscase, “what” is better than “whatever”, because “whatever” implies that one don’tknow for sure whether Baker lacks skills.

“make up” and “makeup” are not the same thing.

“make up for” is usually immediately followed by “someone orsomething”.  In this case, there is nosomeone/something directly follows except the “by the passion”, so “make up” isfine in B.

看了全部,我也覺得是B,因為what he lacked in technical skill was more than made up by應該就是for which he was lacking in technical skill was more than made up by the passion變來的,既然使用what了,就不應再出現介係詞for
支持B,make up和make up for都对,但是what比whatever好

我觉得是在考转折,而且 make up 和make up for 的用词好像都不错。

答案应该是D,这里只能用make up for,不能用make up;而what和whatever之间的差别在此无关痛痒。

LONGMAN:

whatever:2

used to say that it is not important what happens, what you do etc because it does not change the situation
:

Whatever I suggest, he always disagrees.
The building must be saved, whatever the cost.
If you are unable to attend the interview, for whatever reason, you should inform us immediately.

而且这里我也查到只有make up for才看到加more than的用法:
make up for something
        phrasal verb
1

to make a bad situation better, or replace something that has been lost
:
The team will be anxious to make up for a disappointing start to the season.
I don't eat breakfast but I make up for it at lunch.
The good days

more than make up for

the bad ones.

I will vote for D, because the most common meaning of "make up" is "constitue, invent or make sth fake", while "make up for" is the complete phrase to express the meaning of "compensate". Plus, whatever is logically consistent with "but", better emphasizing on the contrast between the two parts of the sentence.

what is not equal whatever, and you could not change original what to whatever.( the mean will be changed)

so, i think B is better

but & whatever overlap

Sorry, but how is "but" overlap with "whatever"? ls kindly explain, thx!

这里表示的意思的Baker的演奏很好,他tech的缺点被play时的passion盖过去了.what he lacked in his tech skills was more than made up by (what he showed in his playing).  后面的what直接用the passion代替了。
