Agricultural
societies cannot exist without staple crops. Several food plants, such as kola
and okra, are known to have been domesticated in western Africa,
but they are all supplemental, not staple, foods. All the recorded staple crops
grown in western Africa were introduced from
elsewhere, beginning, at some unknown date, with rice and yams. Therefore,
discovering when rice and yams were introduced into western Africa
would establish the earliest date at which agricultural societies could have
arisen there.

答案是A. 我的问题是 that they stopped cultivating 是不是起到了画蛇添足的作用?如果没有这句话,A明显就是答案,可是有了这句,A的意思就变成了: 当rice and yams被引进的时候,西非人没有开发(他们停止种植的)staple crops. 这不正说明了他们在rice and yams被引进之前曾经种植过staple crops吗?

2.	to use a cultivator on.

总算明白了,cultivate在这里是prepare,promote的意思. 句子的意思是: 当rice and yams被引进的时候,他们停止了推进(尝试)种植,没有开发成功staple crops.
