RC 12:
But situational factors do not account for all
code-switching; it occurs even when the domain
would lead one not to expect it. In these cases, one
language tends to be the primary one, while the other
is used only sparingly to achieve certain rhetorical
effects. Often the switches are so subtle that the
speakers themselves are not aware of them. This was
the case with a study of a family of Puerto Rican
Americans in another community. Family members
believed they used only English at home, but their
taped conversations occasionally contained some
Spanish, with no change in situational factors.
When asked what the presence of Spanish signified, they
commented that it was used to express certain
attitudes such as intimacy or humor more
emphatically.
That's B
RC 20:
However, while a literary work is indeed
encoded in various signs and symbols that must be
translated for the work to be understood and
appreciated, it is not a map.
The author here is only conceding a point that "a reader must be guided by the text to some degree" and then stress his OWN point that these "signs and symbols" should not dictate readers like they do in a map.
RC 22:
Main point of this passage is given in the last sentence in the first passage: " There is therefore a need to consider the different intellectual property policies that govern the commercial exploitation of faculty inventions in order to determine which would provide the appropriate level of flexibility." The whole passage was analyzing current polices and pointing out their weakness. In the final paragraph, the author give his anwer that mirrors the main point.
D summrizes the whole things well.
A missed the author's main point. The author clearly says "flexibility" is needed, which is 180 to what A says : a clear-cut policy.
LR 22
22. Taking advanced mathematics courses should increase
a student’s grade point average, for, as numerous studies have shown, students who have taken one or more advanced mathematics courses are far more likely to have high grade point averages than students who have not taken such courses. The flawed pattern of reasoning in the argument above is most similar to that in which one of the following? (A) Fur color is in large measure hereditary, for, as many studies have shown, black cats are more likely than others to have black kittens, and orange cats are more likely to have orange kittens. (B) Water can cause intoxication. After all, imbibing scotch and water, whiskey and water, bourbon and water, gin and water, and vodka and water all cause intoxication. (C) Eating a diet consisting primarily of fats and carbohydrates may cause weight gain in some people. Studies have shown that many overweight people eat such diets. (D) Buying running shoes should increase the frequency with which a person exercises, since those who buy two or more pairs of running shoes each year tend to exercise more often than those who buy at most one pair. (E) Reading to children at an early age should inspire them to read on their own later, since studies have shown that children who have not been read to are less likely to develop an interest in reading than children who have been read to. When you see "flawed pattern of reasoning", the first thing you need to do is to figure out what flaw it is. The author here apparently wants to establish a cause-effect relationship, but he/she got a complete 180: taking the effect as cause. Students who are good at math (above average score) are more likely to take advanced math courses, not the other way around. is most similar to that in which one of the following? D presents a same logic flaw: reversed cause-effect relationship. People who like running would be more likely to buy running shoes.
E presents a legitimate case of causation. And another point of unparallelness is that chirldren are READ to, which is not their own action. In the stimulus both score high and selection of advanced courses are one's own action.
Something is wrong with the editing and I cannot fix it.
Sorry, it looks messy.
Puerto Rican的例子里,line54只说"occasionally contained some Spanish"。
thank u guys, so much appreciation
i have looked for this book mentioned above, but it seems that only Amazon has one.
do u have used one?
for the game question.
My PROBLEM is I was thinking they were asking me the full possibility that the F may apply for, but it seems that the answer matches the one meaning only one of them.
so it is the problem
Does this question type in other situations not mean the full probabilities?
1 which of the following *** each of which could be ***
2 which of the following is an accurate and complete ******
thanks, fully-understanding the question is so important...
No doubt I was in confusion...
