首先是同位语和插入语，in other words, a boat...解释"bult"boat，前后都要有破折号。
其次是平行的定语从句，that is ...and that thus represents...

这里的结构是
old wooden hull that is A and that thus B

That is A 做定语从句修饰 hull 没问题
        可是从逻辑意思上讲 B是由A得到的 A和B是因果关系
        这样有因果关系的A B也可以并列做hull的定语吗
             总觉得所谓并列是独立关系
        也就是去掉that is A至少可以讲的通
        例如
            sth that is red and that is wood 可是这里去掉that is A 显然不行

从逻辑上讲如果it指代old wooden hull是不是似乎C更好些
如果it指代整句话意思
C显然错

因为原句是that..., and that...结构，而C选项改变了这种结构，即是改变了句子重心——改变原句的重心是GMAT语法不prefer的；

而且C中,and it represents...and引导一个独立的句子，应该要求结构和前面一个句子对称，而C做不到对称所以是错误的。

只是推测。。

E项可以理解为, 从in other words开始一直到句末,都是插入语.

E的意思不對construct那個boat的目的是represent a major advance.
C的it指代不清

看Prep破解里面,对于C的解释说错误在于and it与主句并列,造成了逻辑意思的错误.实际上应该是两个that引导定从的并列.

同时,又说代词it/this/that不能单独充当主语,必须加上名词才能作主语这个地方我一直搞不明白.难道可以理解为it/this/that单独充当指示代词,这个选项可以排除吗?

A中两个that体现平行，两个—体现句子结构，最好。B中this不能单独作主语，时态错。C中and it represents…语法上只能与主句并列，但逻辑上两句不是并列关系。D中was representing时态与is the earliest example时态不一致，并且“名词＋后置分词定语＋定语从句”的结构不合理。E中to do表目的不需要。

应该是造船这个行为代表一种进步吧

你错了，指示代词this，that等不能作主语，it当然可以作主语
