个人认为C选项前半句的they指代不明确。此题可以不先考虑时态。选项B有Though,改变句意。选项D的Applying的动作发出者是scientists，而不是the molars of prehuman ancestors 。A用法不地道。故选E.

C 中的examine 和determine 是独立的、先后顺序的逻辑关系，应该用and并列起来

同意楼上的,还有一点就是C中的when用的不对,改变了原来的意思,变成了:当应用...的时候,科学家....

中文好象没啥差别,用英文理解就差远了.GMAT里经常用when从句作为错误选项来混淆视听.按意思应该是,科学家应用....的方法,examine 和determine 了....

同意3楼的,时态不作为首先排除的标准.
