After more than four decades of research and development, a new type of jet engine is being tested that could eventually propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help boost cargoes into space at significantly lower costs than current methods permit.

看了很多人的讨论，在A，E中间纠缠，E我觉得没有什么问题，could 应该和have the capability 重复。 A里面不是太懂，that从句可以放在动词后面修饰主语么？此外，我选C，不知道为什么不对，也没有人解释。说helping不对，但helping可以是状语修饰主句阿。而且able to 前面省略（being）我觉得也很合适。

请哪位NN出来解答一下，不胜感激。

答案：E. tested, and it could eventually have the capability to propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help

人们可能的疑虑是：could和have the capability to的重复。实际上根本不是。could是可能的意思，也就是说，它可能能够...。完全不存在重复。另外，只有“可能”是符合逻辑的，因为is being tested，正在被测试，也就是说，这个engine的具体性能还没有盖棺定论。

A选项明显是错的。如果按照A的意思，假设其语法上是对的，那我们翻译一下就是：在经过了40多年的研究之后，一种（可能。。。）的引擎正在被研究。这个句子在意思上明显就不对；after和主句的意思没有正确的逻辑关系。另外，这种结构肯定是错的。中心词和定语从句之间是不能间隔谓语的，可以上状语、补语等。

再综合一下对A的分析回过头来说说E。E的逻辑明显就清晰很多：在经过40多年的研究，人们在测试一种新的引擎，而它有可能能够...。

同意楼上的答案,could是表示可能的意思,但不表示有没有能力做什么,而have the capability to 表示有能力做什么，所以二者不是重复的

C的错误太多了。首先，eventually...表示结果，也就是说肯定了，但事实不一定。其次，helping和什么平行呢？如果是propel，那么应该用原形，它和propel共用一个不定时的标志“to”
