The discovery that Earth’s inner core
rotates independently of and more quickly than Earth’s outer layers is

B的of不应该省略（介词通常不省略，否则容易引起歧义）

A为：core rotates independently of and more quickly than Earth’s outer layers is responsible for advancing studies of the flow of heat from the inner through the outer planet and （studies） of the formation and periodic reversal in direction of Earth’s magnetic field

B不好：不对称是一方面，and前面也不应该有那个逗号

不知道大家有没有注意到:

A为：core rotates independently of and more quickly than Earth’s outer layers is responsible for advancing studies of the flow of heat from the inner through the outer planet and （studies） of the formation and periodic reversal in direction of Earth’s magnetic field

这里independently of , 这个OF是不是多余的啊?

句子结构：
The discovery that the core rotates... is responsible for studies of... and of...   主谓一致，平行结构
