答案是D。作题时不太明白 making do 的用法，所以选了C。
问题：C的错误究竟是them指代不清，还是while not having 用法不对，还是不如D简介。谢！

make do with 设法应付 with....
make do without 设法应付 without....

have表示有...的意思时只表示人有什么东东，

这里明显不是讲他们有没有 timber and nails, 另外即使这个用法成立，这句应该真么说：making them while having no timber and and nail更好些

这里还是省略产生的问题, 首先while having必然是省略了主语+be, 省略的应该和主句主语一样, 这里的making的主语是nineteenth-century settlers, 补全就是while nineteenth-century settlers were not having timber and nails. 一个过去进行时? 不Awkward吗?

我发现了C一个很大的问题，settlers used mud and grass to build their homes, making them while not having，第一个their指settlers,而后一个them指their homes,这是在gmat中不允许的指带错误，同句代词不同形式也要指代相同事物。

A错在it指代build their house这个动作,或者说指代前面整句话.这个是GMAT不允许的,同样不允许的还有which指代前面整句话等等

B,it问题,还有就是did前面逗号联2个句子

C,them/their

E,making do without,表明前面主语应该是人不是house所以排除,而且E被动,没有道理,有动作发出人,而且D主动在哪里站着让你选,没有比较选E.

关键这题看不懂make do with/without.

上来就咣咣删了DE,然后ABC看着歇菜,都有错....汗

可不可以这样理解,D中的do表示强调,意思为"的确"?请NN指教

1，同一句子中人称代词和物主代词（they,their）可以指代不同的东东；

2，while doing状语从句省略形式，逻辑主语为settlers，但是不一定还原就一定是while settlers not were having的形式，也可以是while settlers not had 的修饰，只要是主动关系就OK的。

所以楼上排除C的理由不充分。
