I think:

"that" is wordy and can be omitted because "one(a distant supernova explosion)" is objective.

that在这个地方是指 explosion.我们把explosion代回可以发现

they believe (explosion) is a type 错

they believe (explosion) it to be 错

they believe (explosion) that it is of 错

D中的that指代不清

从句意来看，XXX cannot be a type，所以只有be of type满足要求，排除A，B，D；

再看C，one they believe that it is of a type previously unknown to science，比较wordy，且it又有指代one的嫌疑，也排除；

E：one they believe to be a type previously unknown to science，如果按照nymph的说法that是被省略了，那么补出that后也不成句子啊
