The key is A. Just wondering in E, does "they" have reference?

they can be books or copies. no clear reference.

the key here is idiomatic: either X or Y. X and Y must be parellel. A is the only answer which fits the requirement. either "as X" or "Y" is not correct.

that is true, but is it sometimes "be", "can", or prop could be omitted but still correct?

it depends.

in here, "be" must stay since books cannot sell themselves!

GMAT usually uses "be" to test whether a comparison is necessary to have the "be".

Parellelism is vital.

if "be" is well known in the comparison, it can be removed.

for example.

Mary is happier than (is) Peter.

His book was sold more quickly than (was) mine.

so in this case, should "either as electronic books or downloadable copies" be always considered wrong?

or it could be correct sometimes if no better option is available, since we could see it as "either as electronic books or (as) downloadable copies"?
