答案是A，我觉得很别扭啊，E为什么不对啊，OG上说E similarly distorts the original meaning, and the past perfect
had been is inconsistent with the past tense used to establish a time frame for the rest of the sentence.
偶还是不明白，怎么曲解意思了？时态怎么不对了？

before Australia was Australia, it was the antipodes--前面A指那块地，后面指A指澳洲，it指前面那A,was指在那块地成为澳洲的时候。清楚。
Australia was what had been known as the antipodes--had been在过去之前，过去是什么？原文没有指代。如果硬要说前面的A是澳洲，那应该是 A is what was known as ...但是改变原意。

2， when past perfect is used, it MUST be very clear that time frame shows the past of the past. otherwise, only past tense is needed.

这道题对于E，我是这样理解的：had been known表示动作发生在was之前，并且到was结束，说Australia was一个再was之前就已经不被承认的东西，是不合逻辑的。不知道这样理解对不对？
我现在的问题是，OG对于C的解释：Nor does it have a referent in C: substituting Australia for it produces a nonsensical statement. 这句话应该怎样理解？

我理解之所以说前面A指那块地，是因为未划线的部分（the opposite pole to civilization, an obscure and unimaginable place ）是前面a的同位语，它的意思表明前面A是指一块地。如果说E选项中的Australia是指澳洲的话，E选项可理解为“澳洲是这样一块地方，它曾经被认为是antipodes”，这句话没有表明澳洲何时不被认为是antipodes的，而且与后面的同位语也不符。

同意，如果后面的was也是had been,那前面就应该是had been.

大体上这么判断，逻辑上就只有A对了

大家有没有觉得，E还有一个排除的原因是：
had been known as和in the minds of 的意思重复了
也就是说犯了redundancy的毛病
