72. A recent United States Census Bureau report shows that there are more than three times as many households where the children and grandchildren are living in their grandparents’ home as compared to households where the grandparents are living in their children’s or grandchildren’s home.
(A)as compared to households where the
(B)as there are households where the
(C)as those whose
(D)than compared to those where the
(E)than there are whose
A: compared to和前面的as…as结构重复
B: correct
C: whose grandparents
A as many as B ?
as many A as B ?
there are 在 第一个as的前面,household where。。。在as many后。
as many 。。
as many household as household
as many household as household
there are households where the grandparents are living in their children’s or grandchildren’s home. A recently published report indicates that the salaries of teachers continue to lag far behind other college-educated professionals, because they make an average of nearly $ A. other college-educated professionals, because they make an average of nearly $ B. other college-educated professionals, by an average of nearly $ C. what other college-educated professionals are paid—making an average of nearly $ D. those of other college-educated professionals—by an average of nearly $ E. those of other college-educated professionals—by an average of nearly $ A: salaries 和professionals比较错,they指代有歧义 B: 同上 C: what are paid=salaries 啰嗦 D: by an average … to almost $24000 less

there are households where the grandparents are living in their children’s or grandchildren’s home.
我觉得最好用"there are XX times as many (n.) as........":
as many as很少有直接放一起连接前后对比用的(没见过). 另外,如果这样用,后边就不能用句子了,就得和households这单个词做比较了.
请NN指教
B应该是最佳答案 但是)as there are households where the

households where the children and grandchildren are living in their grandparents’ home as there are
households where the grandparents are living in their children’s or grandchildren’s home.

89. A recent national study of the public schools shows that there are now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were four years ago.
(A) there are now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were
(B) there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were
(C) there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were
(D) every thirty-two pupils now have one micro?computer, four times as many than there were
(E) every thirty-two pupils now has one microcom?puter, four times as many as
Choices A, B, and C appropriately use the construction "one X for every thirty-two Y's" to describe the ratio of computers to pupils, but only C, the best answer, is error-free. In A, are does not agree with the subject, one microcomputer; furthermore, in A, B, and D, than is used where as is required. Choices D and E reorder and garble the "one X ..." construction, making four times as many refer illogically to pupils.
至于A as many as B 与 as many A as B 的问题,其实是一个 A do B as many as C do 和 A do as many B as C do 的差异问题。
A do B as many as C do 这种形式,但是A do as many B as C do 这个也是对的,请看OG例题:

168. Today, because of improvements in agricultural technology, the same amount of acreage produces double the apples that it has in 1910.
(A) double the apples that it has
(B) twice as many apples as it did
(C) as much as twice the apples it has
(D) two times as many apples as there were
(E) a doubling of the apples that it did
Choice B, the best answer, correctly uses the adverbial phrase twice as many... to modify the verb produces; properly employs many rather than much to describe a quantity made up of countable units (apples); and appropriately substitutes did for the understood produced to express the logically necessary past tense of produces. Choice A awkwardly substitutes the adjective double for twice; uses that without a clear referent; and misuses has to refer to events occurring in 1910. Choice C employs the incorrect much in a wordy construction and also misuses has. D is wordy and imprecise;... as there were in 1910 refers to all apples produced in 1910, regardless of location. E is illogical: since that refers to a doubling, E nonsensically asserts that the doubling occurred in 1910.

156. Dirt roads may evoke the bucolic simplicity of another century, but financially strained townships point out that dirt roads cost twice as much as maintaining paved roads.
(A) dirt roads cost twice as much as maintaining paved roads
(B) dirt roads cost twice as much to maintain as paved roads do
(C) maintaining dirt roads costs twice as much as paved roads do
(D) maintaining dirt roads costs twice as much as it does for paved roads
(E) to maintain dirt roads costs twice as much as for paved roads
This sentence compares the costs required to maintain two kinds of roads. B, the best choice, is able to maintain parallelism in the comparison as well. Choice A incorrectly shifts the meaning by comparing the cost of dirt roads with the cost of maintaining paved roads. Choice C does the opposite: it compares the cost of maintaining dirt roads with the cost of paved roads themselves. Choice D further confuses the sentence by adding a nonparallel clause, it does for, in which it has no clear referent. Choice E introduces the infinitive phrase to maintain... and wrongly attempts to complete the comparison with the nonparallel prepositional phrase for....

as many as 排除DE
C as those whose, whose grandparents are living in their children’s
A compare to 和 as many as 重复
A recent national study of the public schools shows that there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were four years ago
呢 不是补出后应该是 there were one microcomputer for every 8 pupils four years ago??
由C的比较结构看,就是在比较这个比率,即there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were (microcomputers for pupils) four years ago.
1 computers for every 128 pupils
there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were (microcomputers for pupils) four years ago.
用 four times as many as there was the ratio (或者one microcomputer for every 128 pupils)four years ago.
或者 four times as many as there were microcomputers for pupils
four years ago. 都可以
Open to discuss........
thank you really very much
A - compared to is unnecesary. Coz u
know, "compared to" is another idiom for comparison which is useless
since there is an idiom as.... as to compare already.
B - Correct.. correctly uses as ... as idiom and
compares "households" precisely.
C - Households are compared to "children and
grandchildren"
D,E - than is a wrong idiom for as... than
omitting "there are"; you would indeed get a grammatically correct
sentence that way.
sentence would be extremely awkward and difficult to read.
So, What we learn from this SC question is that:
Both
as many x... as y..
and
there are as many X…. as there are Y…
are perfectly correct.
