Good examples!
I thought that we could conclude that 'distinguish A from B' is used between things in the same catogaries, for example, good paintings and bad paintings, addictive drugs and nonaddictive drugs, etc, while 'distinguish between A and B' applies to a comparison between things in different catogaries, for example, mood swings and depressive psychosis. But, Longmen has counterexamples:
distinguish between His attorney argued that Cope could not distinguish between right and wrong. distinguish somebody/something from a method of distinguishing cancer cells from normal tissue
