标题: [求助]语法补充题250题 11
11.The growth of the railroads led to the abolition of local times, which was determined by when the sun reached the observer’s meridian and differing from city to city, and to the establishment of regional times.
(A) which was determined by when the sun reached the observer’s meridian and differing
(B) which was determined by when the sun reached the observer’s meridian and which differed
(C) which were determined by when the sun reached the observer’s meridian and differing
(D) determined by when the sun reached the observer’s meridian and differed
(E) determined by when the sun reached the observer’s meridian and differing

答案E
我选的B,不选E因为感觉分词形式修饰名词中间不能用逗号隔开(此种情况一般都是做状语了),如果实在要选E是考虑到要用一般时态来表示local time是一恒定的概念吗?

In choice B, the tense of 'differ' is obviously wrong. But i am not sure if it's right with a comma in choice E. Are you sure that the comma is not underlined.

There is a agreement error in B. Single verb "was" does not agree with the plural subject "local times".
As for why add a comma before determinded, I am not quite sure, maybe because the modified clause is too long and add a comma make the structure more clear. The other way to think this is that since there is a comma before the "and to" main clause, you need add a comma before determinded to make the modified clause stand alone.

Is the tense of "differe" wrong? I think it's right and parallels with "were". Why B is wrong is that it should be "were", while not "was".

此题关键是平行结构, 只有E 最平行, B 因为Were错
作者: tina_aya    时间: 2004-5-21 23:05

如果是平行结构的话,为什么不选d要选e,我绝得determined and differed有平行阿,determined and differing有平行吗

作者: jetrong    时间: 2004-5-26 11:22

不能光看形式的平行,要注意动作的施动者是主动还是被动!

在OG上就有类式的题!

  这个题目我原来也错了,后来自己分析如下,大家给看看。

11. The growth of the railroads led to the abolition of local times, which was determined by when the sun reached the observer’s meridian and differing from city to city, and to the establishment of regional times.

     E  我觉得是插入语,differing 表示主动语态的意思。整个句子补全了应该为:

The growth of the railroads led to the abolition of local times, determined by when the sun reached the observer’s meridian and differing from city to city, andled to the establishment of regional times.

local times 我不知道是单数还是复数,所以ABC, 我一个都没选择。而且,我觉得DE比较简洁。

为什么这里分词 determinated 逻辑主语不是指代GROWTH,而是 TIMES?这里有逗号啊。

为什么 C 中的过去进行式和过去时不能并列?

请帮解释一下?

顶一下!
作者: zenger    时间: 2005-8-29 13:30

同意zcao2,这才是我找的问题。

作者: zenger    时间: 2005-8-29 13:34

不过我想通了。

which were determined by ... and differing

如果补齐,变成which were determined by ... and (were) differing的确不是不平行,但是were differing的时态不能在这里使用(意思不对了)。这里还是要用differed才能和were ditermined平行。

对!OG上有这个:

210. Scientists have recently discovered what could be the largest and oldest living organism on Earth, a giant fungus that is an interwoven filigree of mushrooms and rootlike tentacles spawned by a single fertilized spore some 10,000 years ago and extending for more than 30 acres in the soil of a Michigan forest.

(A)  extending

(B)  extends

(C)  extended

(D)  it extended

(E)   is extending

Choice A, the best answer, preserves grammatical parallelism while allowing for logical expression of temporal relationships; A employs the parallel participial phrases spawned... and extending ... to modify filigree. Other choices present different grammatical constructions that are not participial modifiers and thus not parallel to spawned: extends in B is a present-tense verb; it extended in D begins a new clause; and is extending in E ungrammatically introduces a new predicate. In C, extended is nonparallel if it is assumed to be a past tense verb form; if it is assumed to be a past participle, it illogically states, as does D, that the filigree extended only in the past.

问题是,为什么local times是复数?time只有在表示时代或时期时,才可能是复数;表示时间,是单数形式,不可数名词。

In B option, there are two sentenses as 定语从句 connected by "and". Would it be run-on sentense? Does it lack comma before the "and"?

分词的并列:

106. The decision by one of the nation's largest banks to admit to $3 billion in potential losses on foreign loans could mean less lending by commercial banks to developing countries and increasing the pressure on multigovernment lenders to supply the funds.

(A)  increasing the pressure

(B)   the increasing pressure

(C)  increased pressure

(D)  the pressure increased

(E)   the pressure increasing

The best answer will complete the phrase could mean less lending with a construction that is parallel to less lending. Here less is an adjective modifying lending, which functions as a noun in naming a banking activity. C, the best choice, parallels this adjective + noun construction with increased [adjective] pressure [noun]. Choice A violates parallelism by introducing a phrase in place of the adjective + noun construction. Choices D and E also fail to parallel the adjective + noun construction. In choice B, the definite article the needlessly suggests that some previously mentioned type of pressure is being referred to, and increasing implies without warrant that the increase has been continuing for some indefinite period of time, not that it occurs as a consequence of the bank's decision.
