I would prefer change the author's sentence to "since it is unlikely that Swift would have the mechanical problems with more than one or two airplanes on a single day" to make it easier to understand.
9 flights are cancelled, if there are 1 or 2 airplanes dedicated to these flights, then the reason should be "mechanical problems", as "since it is unlikely that Swift would have the mechanical problems with more than one or two airplanes on a single day".
9 flights are cancelled, if there are 9 airplaned dedicated to these flights, then the reason should be something else (the author's conclusion).
