标题: T-4-Q12 again (新prep 2-177)

T-4-Q12

For the farmer who takes care to keep them cool, providing them with high-energy feed, and milking them regularly, Holstein cows are producing an average of 2,275 gallons of mild each per year.

  1. providing them with high-energy feed, and milking them regularly, Holstein cows are producing

  2. providing them with high-energy feed, and milked regularly, the Holstein cow produces

  3. provided with high-energy feed, and milking them regularly, Holstein cows are producing

  4. provided with high-energy feed, and milked regularly, the Holstein cow produces

  5. provided with high-energy feed, and milked regularly, Holstein cows will produce

Why choose E? 和"For the farmer who takes care to keep them cool"的逻辑关系?

What's the logic behind it?

provided with high-energy feed, and milked regularly的逻辑主语是cows,不能选a或b,providing 修饰的主体有歧义,也讲不通;

For the farmaer 。。。

还是不明白...E项为什么不对,providing them with high-energy feed, and milking them regularly可以视为是farmer作主语, providing, and milking作伴随状语吗?

For the farmer who takes care to keep them cool

Provided  with high-energy feed, and miked regularly, Holstein cows will produce an average of 2,275 gallons of mild each per year
for the farmer who takes care to keep them cool.

牛们给自己providing them with high-energy feed, and milking them regularly

When it comes to milk production, nothing beats Holsteins. For the farmer who takes care to keep them cool, sated with high-energy chow, and milked regularly—often under the management of a sophisticated computer—these familiar black-and-white cows produce an average of 2,275 gallons of milk each per year. The average Brown Swiss, in contrast, produced only 1,820 gallons last year, and a Jersey less than 1,600.

本题中cool,provided with,milked是平行关系,都是keep them的补语。句子整体结构是:for sb.,cows do sth.。

So, A should say "providing them with high energy feed, and milking them regularly, Holstein cows are producing " This makes a list out of "to keep," "providing," and "milking" which is a list, but it fails the parallelism test. Also, the verb tense "are producing" is wrong - if the farmer takes care of them, they will respond a certain way. Eliminate A. (Note that I added a comma missing from the original text, above.)

B also has parallelism issues (providing, milked), as does C (provided and milking). D and E have parallelism with provided and milked, but they still don't match "to keep." And this is where this one gets really hard. Most people will want to keep this as a list of three things, with those three words properly parallel - and that would be a good way to write the sentence, but they haven't given us that option.

If we lopped off that opening clause, we'd have "Provided with high energy feed, and milked regularly, Holstein cows..." That's okay. Then they add this separate clause out front (the "For the farmer" bit) and this is what makes it sound bad b/c we want to combine that opening clause with the provided and milked piece. Since we don't have that as an option, we're forced to look at them as separate items (though we do still want parallelism between provided and milked).

Then, we're just left with "produces" vs. "will produce" since D and E both use provided and milked. The sentence begins "For the farmer who takes care to keep THEM cool" so we have to use plural for the cows. Answer D uses singular, so E is the answer.

A. providing them with high-energy feed, and milking them regularly, Holstein cows are producing我觉得没有歧义,既然providing后面接的是them就不可能会指代到单数farmer,也不可能指代到cows本身(因为如果指代cows那就一定会是themselves),根本不存在歧义。

E.provided with high-energy feed, and milked regularly为什么就不会产生歧义去指代前面的farmer呢?

Ding....very good explanation..
For在句首表示原因,后面三个成分并列: the farmer/ provided/ milked 都是用来表示原因的,所以milked前面有",and"
Provided with high-energy feed, and milked regularly, Holstein cows will produce an average of 2,275 gallons of mild each per year for the farmer who takes care to keep them cool.

Original sentence: When it comes to milk production, nothing beats Holsteins. For the farmer who takes care to keep them cool, sated with high-energy chow, and milked regularly—often under the management of a sophisticated computer—these familiar black-and-white cows produce an average of 2,275 gallons of milk each per year. The average Brown Swiss, in contrast, produced only 1,820 gallons last year, and a Jersey less than 1,600.

cool,provided with,milked是平行关系,都是keep them的补语。
所以去掉A.B.C., D.E.对

D and E have parallelism with provided and milked, but they still don't match "to keep." And this is where this one gets really hard. Most people will want to keep this as a list of three things, with those three words properly parallel - and that would be a good way to write the sentence, but they haven't given us that option.

If we lopped off that opening clause, we'd have "rovided with high energy feed, and milked regularly, Holstein cows..." That's okay. Then they add this separate clause out front (the "For the farmer" bit) and this is what makes it sound bad b/c we want to combine that opening clause with the provided and milked piece. Since we don't have that as an option, we're forced to look at them as separate items (though we do still want parallelism between provided and milked).

如果provide做伴随,那应该修饰take care,但是本身provide sth and milk regularly就是take care的两种具体方式,整体和部分无法伴随进行,所以ing形式不合逻辑。

最后:C 中  and milking them regularly 无平行对象

For the farmer who takes care to keep them cool 看成一个独立的部分,而不是把它看成是for引导的一个原因状语。
