Tiger beetles are such fast runners that they can capture virtualy any nonflying insect. However, when running toward an insect, a tiger beetle will intermittently stop and then, a moment later, resume its attack. Perhaps the beetles cannot maintain their pace and must pause for moment's rest; but an alternative hypothesis is that while running, tiger beetles are unable to adequately process the resulting rapidly changing visual information and so quickly go blind and stop.
which of the following, if discovered in experiments using artificially moved insects, would support one of the two hypotheses and undermine the other?
A. When a prey insect is moved directly toward a beetle that has been chasing it, the beetle immidiately stops and runs away without its usual intermittent stopping.
B. In pursuing a swerving insect, a beetle alters its course while running and its pauses become more frequent as the chase progresses.
C. In pursuing a moving insect, a beetle usually responds immediately to changes in the insect's direction, and it pauses equally frequently whether the chase is up or down an incline.
D. If, when a beele pauses, it has not gained on the insect it is pursuing, the beetle generally ends its pursuit.
E. The faster a beetle pursues and insect fleeing directly away from it, the more frequently the beetle stops.

OG题:B前一部分:in pursing a swerving insect, a beetle alters its course while running - swering是突然转向,偏离轨道的意思。 后一部分:its pauses become more frequent as the chase progresses.
Prep
B: the beetles usually respond immediately to changes in the insect's direction

C strengthens the alternative hypothesis and weakens the idea that they have to pause because they cannot maintain their pace and have to pause to rest.
The reason C weakens the idea that they have to pause to rest is that presumably, they pause because their strengths have given out. However, C says that they pause at fixed intervals, and if the prey begins to flee, the tiger beetle will increase its speed after the pause. This suggests that it pauses not because it has to rest to recuperate. As it pauses at fixed intervals, and yet can expend more energy by running faster, it means that when the beetle paused before the change in speed, it has not become exhausted. Thus it must have paused for other reasons.
The reason that C strengthens the alternative hypothesis is that the speed of the beetle did not increase the moment the prey begins to flee, but has to wait until the next pause. This suggests that it did not see that the prey has begun to flee until it paused, which supports the idea that the beetle cannot process the changing visual information because it is running so fast.

OG, "this statement provides information that strengths the second hypothesis: the swerving pursuit and the resulting continual course adjustments appear to be forcing the beetle to stop with increasing frequency to sort out the erratic visual information".

Two hypo: 1) Beetle stopsto take rest
2) It stops toadjust with changing visual information
A When a prey insect is moved directlytoward a beetle that has been chasing it, the beetle immediately stops and runsaway without its usual intermittent stopping.
Incorrect. I guess you can read this as undermining point 1 because there is nostopping when it runs away, but does it strengthen choice 2? No. This tells usthat if the insect decides to move into an attack position the beetle runsaway. It doesnt mean that they can process changing visuals and it specificallystates that the direction here is straight.
B In pursuing a swerving insect, a beetlealters its course while running and its pauses become more frequent as thechase progresses.
"In pursuing a swerving insect, a beetlealters its course while running undermines (2) andsuggests the beetle CAN see.
"Pauses become more frequent as the chase progresses" strengthens (1) andsuggests the beetle DOES get tired.
C In pursuing a moving insect, a beetleusually responds immediately to changes in the insect's direction, and itpauses equally frequently whether the chase is up or down an incline.
"In pursuing a moving insect , a beetle usually responds immediately tochanges in the insect's direction" undermines (2) andsuggests the beetle CAN see.
"it pauses equally frequently whether the chase is up or down theincline" also undermines (1) andsuggests the beetle does NOT get tired.
D If, when a beetle pauses, it has not gained on the insect it ispursuing, the beetle generally ends its pursuit.
irrelevnet
E The faster a beetle pursues an insectfleeing directly away from it, the more frequently the beetle stops.
Does not undermine any of two hypo
