标题: south carolina Finance v.s. UTaustin risk management

I know the difference in the ranking of those two universities. But Finance major is definitely hotter than risk management (placement is better). My major is in Stat now, so I am an outsider of business school, although taken some finance courses.

anybody can tell me the pros and cons of those two offers? (I noticed somebody on this board is waiting for SC's offer. I am quite familiar with this program, so I can take your questions about this program)

Depends on what your value.

So far as I know, both of them are promising programs. It's true that a Finance Phd earns more or goes to better universities as faculty, but the difference is not that big in my perspective. What you need to find out is what topics Finance Phds learn and study, and what for RMI PhDs, that's really important.

I noticed that you worry about whether your lack of business background will cause you some trouble. My idea is, it will, but nothing to do with this decision. Both of the two programs are highly business-related, you have to go over that disadvantage anyway.

I actually have a campus visit to USC scheduled on April 5th, for finance phd program, so I do want to learn more about that program.
It would be even better if you can compare it with finance phd in Ohio State Univ.

Btw, could you tell me when you got your offer? After an interview/ campus visit or not?

I think you made a mistake: this Offer I got in Finance is South Carolina, not Southern California. If I got offer in Southern California, then I wouldn't have such concern and will definitely go to Southern California.

I am not familar with the two programs you are comparing with, but I would like to share my feeling after I came back from Austin: The funding in business school is very important. The dean of the UT now is good at collecting money, so they are recruiting many new faculties. Even just in risk management area, there are will be three new faculties including a senior position next year. I believe that the ranking of this business school will definitely go up in the next few years.

the Finance Department is small, and there may be only 2-3 professor is active now(publishing paper). The good thing is there are two young Chinese professors both double Ph.D., strong background come here recently. I believe that what they are doing are very quantitative. So if you are of Math or Physics major, they may be of your type.

Of course, professors are very very nice. You know, people in south are nicer....

South Carolina's Finance seems to be very good. All profs are from big places. You will surely learn something........

觉得了 University of South Florida的教授打电话回邮件的时候也非常nice 不像北方的很多学校

呵呵不过我觉得USF和USC-Columbia Finance的水平差不多而且觉得USF的更多样性一些不过就商学院来说 Moore名气更大因为HR很强。。

我要崩溃了！现在好多朋友和我的finance的老师都让我放掉austin的 offer。说finance怎么怎么好，还有出来的收入比 b-school其他专业都高什么的。我彻底糊涂了！大家过来把我拍醒吧！！！
