2/3 split between has/had usage.

usage of 'had' should be correct because the time of reference is 'young manhood' and yankee peddler discovered before this time of reference. right ??

A, B out.

C is out. discovering..had..knew

Between D & E..I am not sure !

in none of the sentence 'the secret' and 'how to use a good story to generate good will.' are not juxtaposed to each other...and that gives me the feeling that we are talkin about a different secret..

To be frankly, I thought C is the only choice here although it was not that good in the placing of the pharse, in young manhood , changning the meaning of the original sentence.

But if in D choice , the semicolon is changed to colon, it will be ok.
