D. covered as much as 90 percent of Thailand and accommodated as many as 300,000 elephants, a third of them...

C错，as much as ，后面大象是可数名词，应该用many；with a third前面有逗号，变成修饰句子主语forest，错误，原意应该是修饰大象的；

D：对，a third of them...做 elephants的同位语，补充说明；
