You want to decline it? Marketing has a much better job market than IS does. Anyway, congrats!

,several people (including some marketing professors) try to persuade me by the better job market too.
I read again the two papers about IS academic job market cometqq posted last year. And I heard a lot about the severe job market and the so-called identity crisis in IS discipline. But I still choose to join an IS program just because I studied and worked in this field for many years and I think my interest, and maybe my strength, is here.
Based on my limited working experience as an IT consultant, I think IS should be an important discipline in business school, but how comes current difficulty? Many professors said it is because of the burst of IT bubble, but I think at least it is partly because of the immaturity of this discipline. Maybe this kind of immaturity means also an opportunity for us...
不是有个美国人说过,Crisis(危机) in Chinese has two words, one means danger, the other means opportunity.
支持!
Man, If I were in your position, I would choose Austin too.
If someone are to rejuvenate the IS field, they should be you Austin people!
yes, UT Dallas grows very fast in recent years, and the faculties there are strong.
I just did not apply for it jsut because the application fee is so expensive for international student...
Thanks martin, I noticed the extremely large proportion of Chinese students in Austin's IS even before I apply. But does it matter much? At least some of their past Chinese graduates placed well, and Dr.Whinston is really a leader in eco tracks of IS research.
I know that IS overlaps with marketing research in Ecommerce field and some IS professors also publish in marketing journals (Actually that is why I apply for a marketing program even without any marketing experience). But are there IS PhDs hunt for marketing positions?

I think martinqiu is referring to IS Ph.d. students who target industry. I do know a lot of IS phd students went to general consulting firm or marketing consulting firm, instead of doing IT counsulting or IT Audit. When it comes to academy, IS phd students definitely hunt for IS positions.
I dont know why people here are so harsh and mean to IS major. Are you guys from IS major? How much do you know about IS? I guess most of what you said were heard from others. And one case does not represent the whole population!! I dont think a strategy major or markteting major can comment on IS. Don't say stupid things here to mislead people. Stop gossiping.
I support birdxxx's decision. It is your life, you decision! If I were you, I would do the same thing.
