标题: Offers: PhD in Finance at UW-Madison & GT

Last night, just got an unofficial notification from the Director of Graduate Studies at UW-Madison-Finance:

I just wanted to write to you let you know that I am going to admit you into
the program with tuition remission and financial aid. The administrative
part of the funding process is not yet done; so I can't give you a formal
financial aid letter yet.

You can expect a letter in one or two weeks.

Up to now, have got offers in Finance from Vanderbilt, UW-Madison, Georgia Institute of Technology, and probably University of Florida (I felt my chance>90%). Still have 4 other schools to hear back from...

我正在考虑中。有的学校对我非常NICE，给了非常好的OFFER，让我非常感动。我想我会尽量在3月15号之前做出决定，尽量不拖在WAITINGLIST上的兄弟姐妹的后腿。

To LZ, 请问你的interest是Market Microstructure 还是 Coporate Finance and Assest Pricing？我觉得同样是Finance的PhD，好像也要分成这两大部分。谢谢!

我觉得我接的那个UW-Madison的电话不能叫面试。我的那个是Dr. Toni Whited打过来的，就讲了大概7，8分钟的样子。

上来就向我介绍她们的program，然后她下一步要对这个program的改革：把assistants（无论是TA还是RA）的工作时间降为每周10小时，把奖学金增加到每年27000刀，把学习期限从6年降为5年。反正都是对学生有利的改革。

然后问我还有什么问题，我就随便问了两个我比较关心的。然后我问她难道没有什么问题问我？她说她基本上已经比较熟悉我的材料，然后她想知道的都已经知道了，没有任何问题要问我。她说她打电话的主要目的就是想看看我口语怎么样，然后说她很满意。

就这样就结束了。什么问题也没有问。然后就说她会从6个在final list上的candidates中选2个录取，下个星期给我答复。然后我就等，就等到了。

估计还没有接到通知的但是被面试过的candidates都会被列在waitinglist上，这是我的估计。因为也就剩6个人了。

我真的不知道ranking的问题。我没有发现任何一个有权威的PHD IN FINANCE的排名。所以我关心的就是PLACEMENT RECORD还有奖学金的高低。

在等的四个学校好像有的名气大一点，有的商学院排名高一点，有的地点好一点。PLACEMENT的情况我还要等他们给了我OFFER以后才好问。如果他们不给，我就尽快在已有的学校当中决定。

现在基本上可能的情况就是：

UW-Madison $27,000/year (maybe?) for 5 years;

Vanderbilt University $29,000/year (two fellowships, one is from Owen, the other is from the Graduate School) for 5 years;

Georgia Institute of Technology $18,000/year for 4-5 years (depends on how long I can complete the program);

University of Florida $23,000/year for 5 years

florida and madison are way top of others. especially, madison. i guess there wont be any difference between u (if u go to wisconsin-madison) and a chicago guy after graduation. in some cases, u may have better choices since chicago has a larger class size....

Of course, Vanderbilt is the best choice among those four, if you can not get any better offer in the future. Good luck!

I believe that UF has better ranking and offers better program, and that FLORIA is a nice place to spend 5 years... It's only my view though

Yep. I just talked with Dr. Jay Ritter during the interview. He is a very nice person. At the end of the interview, he gave me a copy of his recent work. Very nice!

学校ranking差不多的时候，location真的也挺重要的，北部冬天太长太冷了。

希望楼主早日再来更牛offer，就不用那么bother了

It does not matter. I just want to know your opinions on this school, hehe. I think reputation of Gatech is good, though.

韦斯康新气候太差了，madison小地方生活比较boring，不过如果喜欢小城生活，另当别论。

Sorry about that. But you know this is a very difficult decision for me to make. I hope you can be patient. I think I will not be able to make my decision well before March 20th. If you are waiting for Georgia Tech, I might be able to do something for you very quickly.

zzwanforever is an econ and stat graduate (pls read the earlier section for more info). it is no wonder that zzwan is having difficulty with choosing among some of the best schools. and he frankly asked for help from all of us. so it may not be just show off..........

i hope u get very similar kind of offerings in the future.

I have turned down GT couple of weeks ago...Financial aid is one thing. The other is that their faculty is not as excellent as that of other schools, although they are pretty good already.

hey when is the due date for your Madison offer? did you request an extension?

well, a better school (man, my dream school!!!!) in NYC just informed me that i'm on the top of their waiting list and they'll let me know the decision in FEW days......but i guess that wont happen before the due date of Madison offer.................and i dont know how to request an extension from Madison at this last minute........

Well, it says I need to respond before April 15th on my offer letter. I think it is normal.

You may ask for an extension. Just ask the school. However, I don't think I need an extension. My fiancee just got in the QMF program at UW-Madison.
