答案是D.

关于D本身没有疑问.

要请教的是,OG在解释选择double 时说,a number can be doubled. 可是,从其本身形式到整个句子构成,double 在此处都大可能是动词;

如果double 是形容词, double the figure 这个语序又很奇怪.

怎么看double的词性和作用呢?

觉着这里 double 不是动词而是形容词，后面跟名词the figure 构成形容词短语作补语表示一种状态或者结果之类的。 In fact,其它表示倍数的词像fivefold只有两个词性，adj or adv.

又看到下面的题目, 好像搞懂了:

嗯，有道理，这两个例子有说服力。可是副词可以用来修饰名词或者名词短语么？例子活生生摆在那里，道理却不太明白。

在这里,副词引导的modifies在作用上相当于表结果或伴随的分词短语,修饰的不是其后面的名词,而是其前面的句子, 所以,不用形容词.

double在这儿不是动词也不是副词，如12楼和13楼所说，我查了朗文词典，double有一种用法是做前置限定词(predeterminer)，相当于the,his等的用法。例句：It's worth double the amount I paid for it.

double作副词的时候只有三种用法，并且都是构成词组，分别是：see double表示“[因眼睛有问题]看到重影”，be bent double表示“弯得很厉害”以及fold sth double表示“将某物对折[使其比以前厚一倍]”

我想这样解释就容易理解了。

我也查了下，果然发现还有predeterminer的用法，看看例句

Over 30% of marriages end in divorce, which is double the number 20 years ago.

将which is 省略的话，就是题目的样子了。double the number

疑惑：难道说double 不是adj吗？最后一个大全的例子应该解释为notably 修饰adj.=William Randolph Hearst’s 而不是说直接用adv.来修饰n.

predeterminer
a word that is used before a determiner (=a word such as 'the', 'that', 'his' etc) . In the phrases 'all the boys' and 'both his parents', the words 'all' and 'both' are predeterminers.
