A survey by the National Council of Churches showed that in 1986 there were 20,736 female ministers, almost 9 percent of the nation's clergy, twice as much as 1977.

A. twice as much as 1977

B. twice as many as 1977

C. double what it was in 1977

D. double the figure for 1977

E. a number double that of 1977's

答案D。我想知道这里double是什么词性？double the figure for 1977在句中是什么结构？还有为什么要用for而不是in呢？看上去觉得别扭。

请大家指点一下啊！

verb

1.twice as much as it was in 1997

2.double the figure it was in 1997

3.double the figure for 1997

我认为都是正确的表达方法

形式分散，应该为插入语

much不对，应该用many

in好一点吧，但for也没错。

回楼上，“2.double the figure it was in 1997”结构有误，it was多余

对了，double这里是形容词。

常见的插入语有形容词(词组)、副词、不定式、现在分词短语、介词短语、从句以及固定短语。

插入语的位置,可放在句首、句中或句末,一般用逗号或分号隔开。

不好意思啊，我昨天左思右想，又觉得糊涂了。

double the figure for 1977既然double是adj.那它应该修饰figure吧，那为什么不是the double figure呢？又感觉the figure貌似一个整体，那double X这种形式又有点像vt.+ n.这种形式。如果是vt.+ n.的话，那好像不应该用动词原型啊。如果是adj.+n.的话，那又好像应该是the double figure才顺口啊。

you are right. "double" here is a verb. double+the+noun is an idiomatic expression.

double在这里是前置限定词perdeterminer，比如all，both

Longman中的例句：It's worth double the amount I paid for it.

顺便也提一下自己的问题：

1. figure如果没有指代歧义的话，是否可以认为figure只能指代数字而不能指代分数呢？

2. 后面的两个短语到底是怎么划分的？我个人比较倾向是两个同位语

almost是个插入语，不考虑

我想请问：as many as (there were) in 1977还是指as many as (it was) in 1977?
