7.Less detrimental than the effects of bacterial transformation is the effects of bacterial deterioration: spoilage of food, metals corroding, decay of wood, and other undesirable alterations of substances.
(A) is the effects of bacterial deterioration: spoilage of food, metals corroding
(B) are the effects of bacterial deterioration: spoilage of food, metals corroding
(C) is the effects of bacterial deterioration, which include spoilage of food, metals corroding
(D) are the effects of bacterial deterioration, which includes spoilage of food, corrosion of metals
(E) are the effects of bacterial deterioration: spoilage of food, corrosion of metals

what is wrong with (D)? thanks for help.

D has 2 problems:

1. Instead of "which includes", should be "which include"
2. The sentence is wordy. Too unnecessarily long.

but i think "which" modifies "deterioration" that is single, so (D) may be grammatically correct. What do you think? anyway, thanks a lot, starwing.

Here "spoilage of food, corrosion of metals... " are noun phrases which refer to the results of deterioration. Thus means, how ever, deterioration is a process. So the logic accordance breaks. How could one includes the result of itsself?

我觉得问题在于，原句用冒号表示强调等等作用，但是改成从句就削弱了语气。

一点个人意见：

一种可能是由于include的用法，A include(s) B, 表示B是A的一部分，而此题无论后面的spoilage of food等是deterioration 还是 effects, spoilgae都是deterioration或effects的一种表现，用include可能不合适：

感觉应该服从原文原文用加冒号的形式实际上是在告诉你:the effects of deterioration are: spoilage of food, corrosion of metals,decay of wood, and other undesirable alterations of substances.而D项正好违背了这一点

my point is that which modifies the effects not deterioration since the verb in the clause is "include" not "includes"

but I prefer E because E is more concise than D. And I do think they both imply the same meaning.

英文中冒号有解释说明的意思如 This is her plan: go shopping.

而spoilage of food,metals corroding都是来诠释前面的the effects of bacterical deterioration,所以冒号不能变吧
