Just got my first offer (Ph.D. in Finance) from Owen School of Management at Vanderbilt University (Phone interviewed on last Saturday night)
Have other 3 interviews to go...
to financePHD: Yep, I remember you got an offer.
But it seems that...Vanderbilt is ranked the lowest among those programs giving me interviews...before and since...according to some so-called ranking published
Hey, guys. I am an international student. Currently I am pursuing two master's degrees simultaneously in a decent top 40 research University in U.S.
MS in Economics-current GPA 4.0
MS in Statistics-current GPA 4.0
GRE: V630(88%), Q800(92%), AWA4.0(32%)(had a bad luck on the writing section)
Courses taken in Econ: Graduate Micro, Graduate Macro, Probability & Statistics(got the highest score in that class, and now I am the TA for that class, can probably get strong LOR from the professor), Econometrics, IO, and some other courses
Courses taken in Stat: Time Series Analysis, Undergraduate Real Analysis(4000 level, used "the elements of real analysis" by Bartle, the same textbook used by graduate Real Analysis in my school)
Courses in progressing: Regression Analysis(in Stat), Mathmatical Statistics(in Stat), Global Enterprise(in Econ), Independent Research
(Can get GPA4.0 on all the courses in progressing without any doubt basing on midterms grades and my feeling.)
Got a Bachelor's degree in Finance in a top 15 univeristy in China. Although my GPA was ranked very high(3rd out of 72 students), the absolute value of my GPA was pathetically 3.3.
My undergraduate school was so harsh~......
The Econ department in my school is not very good(they only have MS programs, no Ph.D. program). The Stat department is very good(can at least be ranked as top 20 in the US)
I have more than 1-year RA experience up to this moment and will continue to be an RA until I graduate. What I did was mostly helping professors in their research. But up to now, I barely have any research paper on my own. The only thing I have is a paper that is gonna be published on the website of some sloan foundation industry center.
I have more than 1-year TA experience (on both undergraduate and graduate courses in Econ) and will continue to be a TA until I graduate. Besides, I taught some classes when professors were absent and gave review sessions rountinely.
LOR: Can get strong recommendations from at least 2 assistant professors and 1 associate professor in Econ. By "strong" I mean they will highly recommend me, I am not sure they are well-known in their fields though.
I plan to apply for Ph.D. programs in Economics with the concentration in Econometrics(no matter applied econometrics or theoretical econometrics).
Harsh and resonable comments are highly appreciated. What kind of schools you guys think I should aim at?(top 40-50?) And if possible, could you recommend any schools to me?
Thank you very much!
I believe you both should let the dept know. some of us may get a chance.........
however this is entirely ur choice. one of you get admission in UW-madison and another in Cornell. So think Vandy is not in your league.
Ft~It seems that someone got my background information posted somewhere else...
just to know whether u r going to decline vanderbilt offer...................
Hi, there.
Sorry...I still need to wait and see. They just raised my fellowship to $29,000/year. So I think I will seriously consider their offer.
I will keep you posted if I have better results from other schools. Thanks.
