just curious, which school gave that kind of interview?
Interview questions depend on the interviewer. Same university but different interviewers have different focuses. Since you are applying PhD, some professors expect that you have "foundational" knowledge. As the questions are too broad to prepare, I suggest you to review your PS and research interest. Also, find who your interviewers are and then read their articles to know their interests.
talked with a professor today for 20 minutes. Some questions he asked:
why do you want to study in this area? how did you develop your interest?
what kind of questions do you have in mind that you want to do research?
what books have you recently read that you think are very interesting?
A questions asked by another professor I talked before:
what other schools did you apply? (This is a tricky question, and I think we need to think over beforehand)
