标题: og 162( 讨论汇总里没涉及此问)

162. Concerned at the increase in accident fatalities, Tennessee adopted a child-passenger protection law requiring the parents of children under four years of age to be restrained in a child safety seat.

(A)  the parents of children under four years of age to be restrained in a child safety seat

(B)  the restraint of parents of children under four years of age in a child safety seat

(C)  that parents restrain children under four years of age in a child safety seat

(D)  that children be restrained under four years of age in a child safety seat by their parents

(E)  children to be restrained under four years of age by their parents in a child safety seat

This question requires the correct placement of sentence parts to achieve accurate meaning and to avoid awkwardness. Choice C most accurately and efficiently expresses the meaning of the Tennessee child-passenger protection law. Choices A and B absurdly indicate that it is the parents, not the children, who are to be restrained. Choices D and E misplace the phrase under four years of age so the phrase dangles and seems to modify restrained rather than children. In addition, E misplaces the phrase in a child safely seat to create the idea that the parents are in a child safety seat.

问题有二:

1C中的restrain不是“限制、抑制”的意思吧,如果是的话,C句岂不是说“父母限制4岁以下的儿童做安全座椅?”查了字典,没有找到合适的意思呀!

restrain

[transitive]

1 to stop someone from doing something, often by using physical force

restrain somebody from doing something

I had to restrain her from running out into the street.

He had to be restrained from using violence.

2 to control your own emotions or behaviour:

Renwick restrained a feeling of annoyance.

restrain yourself (from doing something)

She could barely restrain herself from hitting him.

3 to control or limit something that is increasing too much:

Price rises should restrain consumer spending.

2OG解释:Choices D and E misplace the phrase under four years of age so the phrase dangles and seems to modify restrained rather than children.但是,under four years of age 修饰restrained说不通啊,翻译过来不是成了“四岁以下的限制”?什么叫“四岁以下的限制”啊?

请指点!感谢!!

restrain 的意思是“把……限制在某个范围内”

be restrained under four years of age会让人误解成:把孩子限制在四岁以下,不让他们长到四岁以上。因此OG说D、E选项中的语序是不合适的。

简单理解,修饰的部分最好紧跟要修饰的部分,这个GMAT经常考到,否则就会confusing。

这个你如果强行用中文去理解,可以想成restrain是限制xxx的活动,而不是你写的中文的那样,会被误解为不让小孩做safty seat。
可以翻译为:
田州法规定要求父母强制四岁以下的小孩坐在安全椅上。

LZ不要总是把原文翻译过来~试着用英文思维来思考~
