whereas连接的部分最好形式对称，A比C优选。而且我觉得这里用名词短语an increase in their use, their subsitution for..来代替if从句更简洁明了。C没有绝对的语法错误，只是从优选的角度排除。至于prep上解释说的substitution 而不是fertilizer本身造成后果，我倒认为不太能成为排除的原因。

C 选项虽然很对称，但是用两个条件从句改变了原句的意思，原句并没有“如果。。。就有。。发生”的含义。而且像比较A不简洁。

A中 an increase...create serious environmental problems逻辑意思对吗？我记得OG中有类似的题（题号不记得了），答案好像是说：不是说增长会产生问题，而是说增长的结果会产生问题。
