刚刚才好像想明白了。从句意来看"as seen in the rings visible in the cross sections of their trunks"应该指的是"the rate at which trees grow"（年轮代表树的生长速度），因此排除C。A和B中又因为主谓不一致排除掉，D没有谓语。只有E对了。
