A的问题在于，前后是两句句子，中间没有连接词，因为这个原因所以D也同样错
B,我的感觉就是主语和谓语隔的太远了

E 正确。B的错误是99 percent 前面没有“the",因为文中是特指，所以错。另外，E中“have appreared"和”have vanished" 对称，比B中一个“appeared" 一个“have vanished"好。

不提同意这位同学有关A的看法，nearly 99 percent of them vanishing.这不是一个句子，所以我认为A的问题还是them指代不清。
另外，关于时态的问题，有关于完成时和过去时的区别。用一般过去时的时候一定要有明确的时间标志词，比如in1980,last year,originally, 3days ago,而现在完成时，表示一个动作发生在过去，但是延续至今或者强调对现在的影响。所以看这句话的意思，应该用完成时比较好。Five hundred million different species of living creatures have appeared on Earth，这50亿生物种类虽然有99%都消失了，但是还是有延续至今的。所以完成时比较好。还请NN指教！

我选E是因为它读起来意思很明确，也就是逻辑关系清晰，B就显得繁杂，而且动词跳跃跨度太大，不太符合常规。
有关特指和泛指，原题干没有the的，E多了the，这是我怀疑的一个地方，好像不能随意添加定冠词的。

我觉得B用过去时是个问题，因为存在过的物种的99％灭绝了，但是还有1％还生存着，所以应该用完成时（从逻辑上分析）

我有个疑问，如果B"five hundred million different species of living creatures that appeared on Earth have vanished" 是一整体，即have vanished是用来修饰five hundred……, 那样的话，就会有歧义了。（虽然这样的话，就不是一句句子了）。
可以这样分析不？所以B错误。

我原来选D,现在第二遍作GWD，觉得B更舒服，E中的99 percent修饰什么呢？没有of读着实在别扭，而且后边跟上复数动词have是不是也不合适呢？毕竟99 percent本身是小于1的概念。还请nn们解释清楚。

时态也奇怪,我当时把have appear的都排除了.完成时不是应该是延续到现在吗.99%都灭绝了..还怎么延续到现在.
后面have vanished到是可以,可以理解为到现在已经消失了.

1. 时态问题
现在完成时，用于表示某事发生在过去、并且状态延续至今，所以have vanished是说得通的，即物种在过去某个时点灭绝了并且这个灭绝的状态延续至今；
但appear不同，appear表示“发生、出现”的时候，是典型的瞬间动词，在某个时点发生了就是发生了，不存在状态延续吧。
2. 特指/泛指问题
个人觉得在这道题中，这不是个问题。地球上出现过的物种就那么500万种，没有更多的其他物种了，不管是特指还是泛指，指代对象没有区别的说。
3. Rhetorical Construction
我是一上来就把D、E排除了的，99% of five hundred million different species这是一个整体，D、E选项把这个整体拆开后，让99%隔那么老远修饰句首的of five hundred million different species，这样的问题貌似OG中有打击取缔过哦^o^

该题考点在于that have appeared on earth 从句到底修饰living creatures还是different species. 哪个加 the 就是修饰哪个，只有E中 species 前加 the 所以选E，
至于为什么要修饰species我也没整明白，可能只有老外能体会出，但感觉题意是要修饰species
这道题有OG12 SC131的影子，各位CDERs可以参照着体会一下

刚刚做到这题，自己选B但是不能确定，现在反复看看觉得还是E更好。第一因为用the修饰species,第二B里面的appeared说不通，确实是还有1%的物种至今仍然存在，不能全部用过去式
E应该正确

PROBLEM: It should be "THE five hundred million different species," otherwise it sounds like there have been more than five hundred million species, but we're just talking about a particular subset of them which happens to include five hundred million species. Also, the use of the simple past tense for "appeared" is wrong, because this should be present perfect (they have appeared starting in the past and CONTINUING into the present).

个人观点，欢迎拍砖：
如果加了the five hundred million different species 特指后 则后面的that 从句做限定性从句无法修饰species 。
且 E 中的 99 percent + 复数谓语 可行 因为前文有置前介词短语修饰 of ...
但是我的问题还是在于 have appeared 和 appeared ，因为有了vanish显然appear的效果不能延续到如今，
尽管E中的优点很多： 避免头重脚轻 ， 现在时和过去时不混用。 但是B中 语法显然也没有错误。
关于 the 加不加,比方说
I like the apple, which is red.
I like the apple that is red.
显然第二句有问题。
I like apples that are red.
我喜欢苹果中红色的那些。
因为E中又有living creatures 的加入，使得that从句有所指。
比较纠结了就，如果实战碰到我会选E。
句子的流畅度优先，B中谓语同主语相隔太远了。

Manhattan 说过 A of B that...that从句修饰A。 意思上说也是species出现比 living creatures 出现 来得好些。。
the A of B that ... 似乎有问题。

A的问题是句子要强调vanish，但是vanish变成从属成分，且them指代不清楚。
B是因为appeared时态错误，因为如果是过去式，那么说明这些species都是过去存在，现在灭绝了，但事实上句子说明还有一些幸存的。
C明显错。
D中of them多余。
E正确。

答案是E，
B中是时态问题，第一没有一个明确的时间点，且对现在有影响，所以排除
另外我个人觉得，A 用them的指代来判断不太好，因为GMAT对代词ambiguity的容忍度高的不得了，几乎这个从来都不是主要出题点，所以我觉得可能的问题是出在用动名词做后置定语这个结构，不能体现出时态特点，给人的感觉是在vanishing的过程中，但原句的意思是想说，已经消失了。
另外， of them 能省则省

这个题作者不应该纠结在A选项吧，这是两个分句子组成的句子，逗号前后都应该是完整的两个句子，用vanishing明显就不是谓语，所以A肯定错。
