quantities of : 好像只可以修饰不可数名词

a quantity of : 好像可以既修饰不可数名词，又可以修饰可数名词

quantities of aid/informaiton/electricity……

a qunatity of acid/dollar bills/fluid

但是a quantity of 修饰可数名词的情况好像很少见耶

不知完整否，还请高人指教

在google里搜索vast quantities of，只能得到修饰water,gas,food的例子，看来这个词组还是修饰不可数的好

a large quantity of 修饰可数或不可数名词，整个短语做主语时，谓语动词用单数；
(large/huge ) quantities of 修饰可数名词，整个短语做主语时，谓语动词一般用复数。高中时候讲的，记得很清楚。

eg:Though smuggling methods involve all forms of transportation,
the largest quantities of drugs are seized on the highways via interdiction
programs.
If a large quantity of flowers is needed to decorate a house or room for a single occasion, and quantity rather than lasting quality is the objective, ...

以上是google里搜的，但好像quantity 不能修饰人

个人认为a large quantity of 和quantity of 都是即可以+可数名词复数也可以+不可数名词

不同之处在于：

a large quantity of +可数名词复数或不可数名词作主语,谓语用单数;

quantities of +可数名词复数或不可数名词作主语,谓语用复数。

解题的关键应该是 rich and poor alike/ both rich and poor的区别，
以及 vast quantities 与 great quantities的区别

这两个区别我也没搞清除，请各位指教

an amount of通常与不可数、无生命的名词连用。如：

She spent a very large amount of money yesterday. 她昨天花了好大一笔钱。

a number of与可数、有生命或无生命的名词连用。如：

The president has made a large number of mistakes. 总统已犯了许多错误。

a quantity of通常与可数或不可数、无生命的名词连用。如：

A vast / large quantity of imported beer has been sold. 已经售出了大量的进口啤酒。

再者，amount, number和quantity的前面经常使用vast, large, small 等表示数量大小的形容词来修饰，而这些形容词前面有时还会使用very等程度副词来修饰。不过，要特别注意的是，在这些用法中，large不可用big 来替代。
