Associate professors have already got tenure but assistant professors have not. Normally, assistant professors cannot supervise students for dissertation.

Asst. professors can be in the committee, but usually they are under the pressure of getting tenure and may not be willing to spare their time on you.

补充一句，associate prof也可能不是tenure，各学校的政策不同

郁闷！我申请的那个学校要求写明with whom you think you have the most compatibility, 这是不是要确定导师啊？我按照研究方向选了一个assistant pro.我是不是犯了个错误啊这个学校还有戏吗？

没有错，选assistant prof没有不对，关键是方向要对，不要从主观上觉得prof比asst强

都是tenure-track的吧

Assistant Prof混个6、7年可以升Associate

I think assistant professors are not a good choice. First, their positions are not stable. More importantly, they do not have power to choose PhD students. Choosing an active and high ranking professors may provide better impression.
