1、先确定是分词还是谓语动词并列。merging从语法上看，修饰的是主句的主语Nuclear fusion ，逻辑上是不通的，其应该是the force 的动作，所以A、B、C排除。

2、D是极WORDY的一种表达方式

与句意正好相反。

可以做状语（估计是你说的“修饰主句中的主语”吧），也可作定、表、补。
下面是一个作定语的例子：
A young man writing novels came to speak to us yesterday.
