until recently 要求主句用完成时; Thus, D beats A, D wins.

What does "Up until" in D) mean?

It is correct to use past tense for 'until', please refer to the following sentence from Oxford:

"He lived at home until soon afte his father's death."

I would pick the answer A)

we are not talking about "until" but "until recently";    Moreover, up until recently = up until now

D的完成时在意思上更加合适

但是D是否会有改变原句重心的问题?

好象是有原句, util recently 一定用完成时吗?

An Asiatic people, the Inuits arrived in Canada during the last Ice Age, but some time after the Indians. Until quite recently, they led a nomadic existence, sheltering in igloos, the ice-block domes that are peculiar to northern-central Canada, and structures made of stones, bones, driftwood, sods and skins.

quoted from Longman

1
if something happens until a particular time, it continues and then stops at that time
- The ticket is valid until March.
- He waited until she had finished speaking.
- Until recently, Anna worked as a teacher in Japan.

- Up until last year, they didn't even own a car.

vote for A

我也觉得until是用过去时,选A吧

"up until" is a compound preposition that means the same as until, as in We can stay until [up until] Thursday. Limit it to Conversational and Informal and Semiformal use, and let context make clear the relation (if any) to bedtime; until by itself is more appropriate in most Edited English.

extract from "The Columbia Guide to Standard American English."

not sure whether it is authorized enought or not, but I think "up" is redundant with until.

那B错在哪?不懂啊,不能用现在时lead吗?

B错在哪?是不是不能随便改成during recent times?

D的问题在于逻辑关系....
shelter在哪儿是对nomadic existence的扩充描述...
因此led a nomadic existence才是主句....
作者: mdautobox    时间: 2011-6-1 21:15
不同意ls
这个题几个选项的区别其一是之前所讲的 until recently
                                   其二就是 到底是lead是主语还是shelter是主语的问题
整个句子的后半部分存在一个并列结构, 即:in igloos,($$$##$!#),and in structures (made of #$$@#),
我觉得整个句子的核心就是 强调 the inuit people 这群人 是shelter在 igloo这个地方和 instructure of¥#%这个地方

还有并不一定原句的意思就是完全正确的意思,虽然大多数情况都是,但这个不是判断的绝对原则

所以我觉得还是D好些

另外对于up until recently 这些不太熟悉的点,应该回避   毕竟每个cs的部分都是有多个差异来供比较的!

是争议题,国外很多论坛上对这道题也有很多不同的解释。
想知道oa是从哪来的?

until recently表示这个动作已经结束,所以应该用过去式而不是完成式。
另外up until中的up有时被视为reluctant

查了好多,最后在beat the gmat上找到的解释
http://www.beatthegmat.com/until-recently-t84934.html
以下内容引用BEAT the GMAT

We use present perfect if an action starts in the past and continues in the present. 'Until recently' means the action was there till some time back but now it is over. So, we use simple past for this. Hence we eliminate D. I am not too sure about the usage of 'up' in D. May be that is unnecessary too.

I think A talks about inuit people and that they led a nomadic life only till recently.. But D is talking about the kind of shelters they have used in the recent past.Change of meaning i think.

Hey All,

I got asked to take this one on by PM.

Until recently, the Inuit people led a nomadic existence, sheltering in igloos, the ice-block domes that are peculiar to north-central Canada, and in structures made of stones, bones, driftwood, and skins.

A. Until recently, the Inuit people led a nomadic existence, sheltering
ANSWER: The list starts after "sheltering". "In igloos" is parallel to "in structures".

B. During recent times, the Inuit people lead a nomadic existence, sheltering
PROBLEM: You can't say "during recent times." During has to be an isolated time frame (During the next five years, during the war, etc.). Also, it would set up present perfect tense, not the present tense.

C. In the times that are recent, the Inuit people led a nomadic existence, sheltered
PROBLEM: "In the times that are recent" is ridiculous, and the past tense wouldn't make sense (but little here does).

D. Up until recently, the Inuit people, leading a nomadic existence, have sheltered
PROBLEM: The "up" is unnecessary. The present perfect tense starts in the past and continues into the present. But the use of "until recently" implies that this has stopped, so the present perfect doesn't work.

E. Until recent time, leading a nomadic existence, the Inuit people were sheltered
PROBLEM: "Until recent time" is gibberish. "leading a nomadic existence" isn't modifying the Inuits anymore.
