a good question! i dont' know it either and i want some NN to explain it.

However, i do feel this sentence is sort of comparison.

To the narcisistic 1980's, personal trainers and fitness coaches are what private fencing masters and dancing teachers were to an earlier time.

据说

A is to B what C is to D 是一个特殊结构。

另外 C的全复数对仗更整洁吧。

不是NN,是菜鸟，昨天刚看到 A is to B what A' is to B', 是固定用法，其中what 可以理解为just as,具体的例子一时找不到了
不过这题用排除法也可以做呀AB中的a private fencing master and dancing teache与前面的Personal trainers and fitness coaches



            单复数不对，另外A中的like 也只限于名词比较，这里是句子比较，B中的have been和D中的are与 an earlier time不对应。E 中的had been不对
