B.doubling to twelve the number of satellites now known to orbit

like A, uses known as orbiting rather than known to orbit, a phrase that is more
idiomatic in context. B, therefore, is the best answer.

本人认为这道题的 A, B 选项并不在于 as 和 to 的区别！这里的“which" 不是指 “the cameras of the Voyager II spacecraft ", 也不是指 "Uranus", 而是指 "The cameras of the Voyager II spacecraft detected six small" 这句话。
所以， A 错在 "which" 不能指代前面所说的话。

如果是选项 (D), 其句子为:

The cameras of the Voyager II spacecraft detected six small, previously unseen moons circling Uranus, doubling to twelve the number of satellites now known as orbiting the distant planet.

as 在句中充当的是介词. 而"介词 + 动词 + 名词 " 的形式都要改写成句子. 所以 (D) 错.

我可能没有写的清楚，刚刚把帖子改过了，我想请教的是b/d，ets提了一句说是uses
known as orbiting rather than known to orbit, a phrase that is more idiomatic in

这个是b/d的区别，我查了不少字典关于known as / to 的区别，没有找到，我想请教的
是这个。

1, haven't heard of 'known as + Gerund'
2, ETS says "D, like A, uses KNOWN AS ORBIGING rather than KNOWN TO ORBIT, a phrase that is more idiomatic i context.", meaning KNOWN TO ORBIT is good.
eg: Chinese are known as good cooks.
Chinese are known to cook good food.
Chinese are known as cooking good food??? Awkard.

it's hard to say... "to be" has a sense of what is going to happen in the future, in my opinion. "He is known to be a famous cooker" says that we know he will be a famous cook. hmm... the logic is a bit of shaky. "predict" is better "know".

for the 2nd sentence... it's quite clear: we know he is a famous cook.

偶的看法是：

satellites now known to orbit...改写之后就是sb. now know satellites to orbit...。这个to orbit...是宾语补足语的。再比如I know how to sing a famous song。这里的to sing...就是宾语的补足语，而how是宾语。

再看satellites now known as orbiting...。改写之后就是sb. now know satellites as orbiting...。这里的as是介词，后面的动名词词组orbiting...是这次介词的宾语，介词有这样的用法吗？如果as后面跟的是名词，就符合介词的使用习惯，就是正确的。

比较一下，还是前面的好。

一家之言，没有查语法书验证，有那位NN给指点一下。

以下know as 与know to 的用法供参考。

1.know somebody/something as something : to have a particular name
example: The main street between the castle and the palace is known as 'the Royal Mile'.

2.know somebody as something

example:Many people knew him as a local businessman.

3.be known to do something:

example:Smoking is known to increase a person's risk of developing lung cancer.

4.know somebody/something to be something
example:It's a story that I know to be true.

有个想法，答案既然说是"the best answer" not "the correct answer",那么或许可以认为从语法现象上来讲D未必不正确，但是ETS更倾向于B的表达。

看了几遍之后，今天突然想到除了可能的固定用法外的另一个用to be的理由，大家参看OG9，在解释believe to be 时，ETS先说那是固定用法，之后有一段解释是：当表述一个已经发生很久了，但最近才刚刚被发现的事情时，用to be 比较合适。。。这题不正好符合这条吗？！

Here's how we should use these:

1. Known to do something: Usually, we say "known to do sth" in two different ways. First, when we want to talk about some fact that people have learned. We also use this when we are talking about the habits of someone or someting that other people know about
Examples:
Smoking cigarettes is known to cause cancer.
Pandas are known to be an endangered species.
Tommy is known to come late to class sometimes.

2.known for: We use "known for" when we want to talk about the reputation of something.
Examples:
The pomo of California were known for their basket making.
New York City is known for its tall buildings and busy lifestyle.
Dolphins are known for their intelligence and playfulness.

3. Known as: We use "known as" when we want to talk about the name of somebody or something or its definition.
Examples;
In some parts of the United States, the lynx is known as a puma.
An irrational fear, one that has no basis in experience, is known as a phobia.

我在牛津辞典第六版找到know as的应为释义。如下：

1～ sb/sth as sth｜～ sb/sth for sth [usually passive] to think that sb/sth is a particular type of person or thing or has particular charateristics： Is's known as the most dangerous part of the city.

2～ sb/sth as sth [usually passive] to give sb/sth a particular name or title: The drug is commonly known as Ecstasy.这种致幻药通常被称做摇头丸。

倒是在1中，字典紧接着就给出了know to的例句，但就是没有know to的英文释义。如下：

He's known to be an outstanding physicist.

known A as B: 那么A=B（可能B的外延大一点但是基本和A是对等的）：

Many people knew him as a local businessman.------〉him 就是一个 a local busi

In some parts of the United States, the lynx is known as a puma.---------〉lynx就是puma

A和B一般都是n。

经常使用的一个缩写A.K.A（also known as）：n1, A.K.A n2, v...........也说明A和B是基本相等的两个东西。

know A to be B: B > A。B的内涵可以比A大得多，以至于绝对不是相等的：

It's a story that I know to be true.---------〉这个story属于true的东西，但是true的东西多了。实际上B是在修饰A，这句如果不是要表达我知道这个含义，完全可以写成It's a true story。

同时know A to be B也可以和know A as B表达差不多的意思：

Also she knew Shill to be a toper and, when in his cups, a man of violence.

尽管如此似乎known as比较常用

Known to do，看了很多文章，极少（我是没有）见到known as+doing的，known as就像是给一个东西下定义，不能把一个n.定义为v.ing吧。如果要表达人们知道什么东西在做什么，就应该用known to do，这样不但合乎语法、逻辑，还简洁。

同时似乎GMAT中如果出现都符合语法的情况，不定式较动名词/现在分词一般也是个优选项

如：the time required to assemble...就比the time required for the assembling of....优先（见OG11-44）。
