One page should be enough.

as far as I know, two or three-page reference letter weighs a lot than one-page

In the U.S., it is hard to image a 2-3 page letter written by your professor. Even those letters with which you are seeking for a facluty job would not be more than 2 pages in most cases.

But anything in the letter should be true and relevant. No one cares about flattering words.

You can talk with him, telling him the points that you would like him to touch in the recommendation. Then, you can ask for his opinion.

if you are really a guy with research potential and you have plenty of research experience, it's normal for American professors to write a 2-page or 3-page reference letter for you

I read a reference letter for helping a PhD graduate from Maryland to find a job of assistant professor. Her supervisor only wrote 1 page (1.5 spacing).

Seems that it is OK for a one page recommendation, since my professor gave me a high remark in the letter.

I think the content, rather than the length, plays a more important role.

Anyway, the letter is up to my professor, I may just leave it as it was, got no more time for it.

I never heard of reference letter longer than one page. it is rediculous.

Professors are very busy, they do not have sooooo much time to write long letters for you. the important thing is the judgement of research potential of you in the letter.

Not exactly.

Many reference letters are longer than one page. It depends.

Professors have their 模板 to write recommendations.

For potential, people need examples to make judgement.

Perhaps professor's opinion on applicant is also informative to adcom, examples can be put into essay. If the professors are willing to spend time on telling those examples, it is surely much better, but it is well known that professors don't have so much time.

It is not good to let the professor know that you've read the letter because it is assumed to be confidential...I think one-page letter is enough, but it seems that the letter you described is not helpful. Maybe you need to find someone else who really knows you at greater depth. (I also had such letters before, but I did NOT use them after reading the content...)

One page should be fine, be normal and hurry up.

Bless...
