RANKINGS

Recently two new rankings of the Cambridge MBA have been published. The Economist Intelligence Unit

has announced its 2006 global full-time MBA ranking. The Cambridge MBA is ranked 1st in the UK, 3rd in Europe and 11th in the world.

The Economist Intelligence Unit comments on the excellent performance of Judge
                Business
School as follows: ‘Having begun in 1990, the University of Cambridge's MBA programme might be considered something of an upstart. But it seems only a matter of time before it is routinely mentioned alongside the world's best.’

BusinessWeek

has also announced its 2006 MBA Rankings. The Cambridge MBA has been ranked 2nd in the UK and 6th in Europe.

These MBA rankings follow on the heels of a global ranking of universities published by the Times Higher Educational Supplement,

which placed the University of Cambridge 2nd in the world. The university rankings are based on a survey of 3,703 academics worldwide. They were also asked to nominate up to 30 institutions they regarded as the best at research.

Thx a lot for the information!

I have the same concern about the GMAT score.
Besides, does Judge has any favor on candidates' working years or backgrounds?
Specifically, do they prefer more matured candidates than young but creative ones?

Looking forward to your kind reply. Thx again!

sorry, I have no idea about the lowest GMAT score. I will ask the MBA office later. BTW, I do think GMAT is a little bit important, especially to whom comes from China (almost the most competitive location) or has no other strong shining point.

If you wanna win, do your best what you can control. Just my two cents!

Regarding the working experience, I have to say our class is diverse enough, coming from 37 countries and all kinds of industries and functions. Our average working period is 7 years, and average age is above 30. I think the main reason is that Judge is one year MBA. However, we do have several classmates, only 21~24 years old, but very smart and creative. So just go ahead.

Someone asked me about the job situation of MBA2005 chinese students. Actually, their job situations are quite well. some stay in europe, some go back to China and still some are preparing for starting up business. But to my knowledge, it really depends on individual networking, even though career service tries the best to help us.

TO 流沙:

I've browsed some relative info. about Judge's MBA.   By comparison, Judge charges less but values more.

But the question is its concern about the academic background, coz Cambridge, its said that, thinks highly of candidate's academic background (such as the GPA, the name of university for undergraduate, which is not my advantage).

Is it the case?

Thanks a lot!   : )

Can I know if Cambridge will offer any scholarship and assistantship to candidate?

I have asked the MBA office. They told me that if you have some weaknesses, you'd better have some strong points. For example, if your gpa is not very high, your gmat needs to be decent, or your working experience is very strong. namely, balance is very important. therefore, I do encourage you to continue the application, and show your highlights.

Regarding the name of the university, it doesn't matter. First of all, they don't know the ranking of china universities; secondly, I know some chinese students who come from non-top universities.

By the way, Judge has recruited a new director, who was the  former INSEAD deputy director. In my opinion, Judge will rise very quickly in the near future. As you have seen, Judge emphasises on academic background, which is determinded by the pervious director, a very excellent scholar. Now it is time to change and it will change very soon.

You can apply Judge after you finish the tests. Judge's application is rolling-based, which means it has no rounds and the deadline is pretty late (about June). But bear in mind that if you want to apply scholarships, it is better to check the website finding the deadlines for schloarships.

Good luck

Sorry, I am familiar with MSF and have no idea about the requirement. It is better for you to inquiry directly to the respective coordinator.

Yes, it is very tough to deal with many stuffs. But after you conquer them, you will find that you have potential to do many things you ever thought you couldn't. Looking back then, everything is relatively easy and you are on a new level. I assume you have got such kind of experience. That only thing you need to deal with is to hold on and keep working!

Hi LZ,

Thanks a lot for your gracious help to us! I took GMAT last week and got only 710. I'm planning to apply for the "MPhil in Innovation, Stratergy and Organization" because this program is very much related to my current job. Unfortunaly, I majored in English and got an BA degree while this program requires an undergraduate degree in social science area. Is it possible that my work experience and my GMAT make up for my degree? Or do you think it's necessary for me to take GMAT again to get a >750 score? Thanks a lot in expecation of your reply. All your advice will be highly appreciated.

I think 710 is a pretty good score. However, because I am not familiar with this programme, I cannot give any advice to you. You may ask the graduate office directly about the requirement (Only MBA has mba office, others need to contact with graduate office).

If you are confident that you may get 750, maybe it is better for you to re-examine. however, 710 is enough even for MBA.

Good luck!

Recently I am pretty busy due to many deadlines of reports. However, I would love to share some feelings about Judge.

The first thing I would like to mention is its practical projects, which allow us to apply the knowledge into the real world. This term, we had Cambridge Venture Project, which collaborated with local start-up companies, helping them address certain strategy, marketing or sales issues. We had a long list to choose, but some teams had to bid for hot topic. Next term, we will have global consulting project, which collobrates with global big companies in many industries, e.g. consulting, ib, hi-tech, energy. Even though the final list has not been revealed, I believe it should be great, especially for whom wants to land a job in UK or change industry or functions. After the third term, we still have individual project, which is chosen by yourself.

The second thing is that, backed-up by Cambridge, it offeres a lot of opportunities for us to learn outside MBA. All kinds of lectures, activities and business competitions are in front of us. The only thing needed to do is to manage the time effectively. As you may know, cambridge has the largest hi-tech Sillion Fan in Europe. In order to help us understand how to start up the business and build the networking, "Cambridge University Entrepreneur" holds "Enterprise tuesday" workshop every week with related business topics. Therefore, if you want to be entrepreneur or start up your business later, Judge is a decent place to study.

Good luck to all applicants!

I think your background is pretty strong. In your case, gmat is not so important as you may think. Besides that, 680 is not a bad score, at least above average. therefore, do not feel frastrated. Putting your effort on the essays is more critical. Personally, I think essays and interview weight more than gmat if you got an average score.

Good luck and wait for your good news!

Good luck for your gmat test then. Jan is not so late to apply. At least, the mba office told me that they will not conduct any interview before christmas, which is actually not true because till now there have had two coming to judge for interview. But what is true is that, most of us start to apply from Jan.

I submitted my application form on 11th Jan, and got informing about interview about 1~2 weeks later. I had a campus interview on March. The next day after interview I got the decision. Everything was very efficient and the staff was so nice and informative. It was really impressive if you ever went through the long-period waiting of other schools.

Regarding the essays, I didn't discuss with any classmates yet. But my feeling is that, different person has different strengths. The key point is to sell yourself, show your true thinking about your career, and demostrate your collabrative spirit. Judge is a relatively small community so that collabration is very important to us. Till now, I haven't found any  really tough guy in our class. If you like such kind of atmosphere, definitely it is the right place.

I am sorry that I have no idea about the Mphil in Finance. However, Phd in Finance is strong here.

If you want to apply mphil, my personal point is that you need to think about your career first then decide. Mphil in the UK is one-year. If you want to find a job here, you will find that almost all investment bankings start to recruit from Sep, when you just come and even haven't settled down.

Good luck!

I did campus interview because at that time I was in Germay. But I am minority among my chinese classmates. Most of them had interview in Beijing or Hongkong because Judge conducts interview there every year .

Some Thais in our class had telephone interview. But the mba office told me that they dont recommend it. So you may check the website to find the interview time and apply slightly earlier.

Dear, Thank you very much.

I also consider that one year  is too short, but I do not have any idea about Phd. I am going to finish my undergraduate study in 2007, do you think how much chance I can be admitted to the Phd programme? I have not taken the gmat test, I do not know if it will be too late for me to apply, because I was told that it is better to apply earlier.

How do you comment between telephone interview and on-campus interview? Is on-site interview almost a guarantee one? Will there be any advantage if I go for on-campus interview?

Hi, firstly congratualations! You almost get there!!!

Yes, to my knowledge, I do recommend you to have an on-campus interview. It was said that about 80% of whom had on-campus interview would be admitted. I was not quite convinced by that, but it is sure that on-campus interview has higher chance to be admitted because it showes your interest towards the program. On the other hand, if you come here for interview, it is also a good opportunity to gain some feeling about "fit", which is very important to your future study and career development.

However, if you cannot come here, it is also fine to have a telephone interview. It really depends on you. This year, most of my chinese classmates had a hub-interview in Beijing, but still someone had a telephone interview. Now they all are here)) What makes difference is your english ability, communication skillls and understanding  yourself.

Best wishes

If I request for a telephone interview, do I need to wait until all on-campus interviews finish? For on-campus and telephone interview, how long do I need to wait for the result after the interview?

Thanks.

If I request for a telephone interview, do I need to wait until all on-campus interviews finish? For on-campus and telephone interview, how long do I need to wait for the result after the interview?

Thanks.

not necessarily. You are allowed to book telephone interview now. I only knew that decision of on-campus interview was usually the next day after it.

Really sorry for late response. The news I got from the MBA office is that they haven't decided whether to conduct telephone interview or not this year. Probably you have to wait for several days to get more specific updates.

very sorry for that!

hi, there is no specific scholarship for chinese students. but you can apply generic scholarships, which can be found on the website. Besides that, judge still provides HSBC loan for study. so don't worry too much on the tuition fee.

up,

liu sha,

could you say something about studying /living in JBS ?  like your study style , workload .

Thanks

作者: 流沙    时间: 2007-1-13 00:18

Hi there, I just started my second term after 4 tests for last term. This term I have 6 compulsary subjects with one elective. Every is allowed to choose one but can attend more. We have study group to deal with group assignments, but we still have individual assignments.

My feeling toward the workload is that, even though i feel i am pretty busy, we are still relatively easy in comparison with other business schools. For example, we have much less exams than Oxford.

Collaboration is very important during the study, and is also a very impressive feature of JBS. Everyone here is very nice. We try to help each other other than competing with each other. Learning from the peers is really amazing process.

Regarding the living, Cambridge and oxford probably are the only two collegial university, which means we live in the colleges and studies in the department. They are independent entities. If you were admitted by JBS, you will be chosen by a college, which is in charge of your living and accomadation.

If having more questions, feel free to ask!

Yes, Judge sends out conditional offer in case your english is not good enough. The candidate whose english needs to improve has to take the english learning course in cambridge before the first term starts.

Some of my classmates attended the sports, i.e. football, volleyball, basketball. It had more fun than competing. This term, we will have a tournament with oxford mba, and may go to paris to attend MBA Tournament this June. Just for fun again!

There is no alumni interview, few tele-interview which was said to be cancelled but still someone got this kind of interview.

One thing that has to mention is that, last monday Judge had the first on-campus interview this year and all of 13 applicants are admitted. It is the first time to admit all the applicants even though the admission rate of on-campus before was also very high, 80%~90%. And 4 of them accepted the offers immediately. Probably it has two reasons, 1. the quality of the pool is excellent this year; 2. the reputation of Judge is rising rapidly.

Another one I would like to mention is the ranking. As we may see, the ranking of JBS is not very high recently. According to the explanation of JBS's director, the datas quoted by those rankings were collected 5~6 years ago, and cannot demostrate the current quality of this program. Actually, in my experience, JBS is getting better recently, especially having the new deputy director.

I am sorry that I am familiar with MPhil in Finance. My opinion is that if your gmat is low, it cannot add any value to your application, and maybe worsely becoming the setback. So just keep it to yourself.

JBS is not well-known for its supply chain management. In my opinion, it is good at technology mgt. But the class here is very diversified so that I have classmates from all kinds of industries and sectors.

Liusha,

It seems every year there were/are around ten Chinese students in MBA class, would you be able to advice some information about what kind of job/location they got after MBA?

Many thanks!

作者: 流沙    时间: 2007-1-23 03:19

Some scholarships come along with the admission, some don't. Therefore, it depends on what kind of scholarship you've got.

From this month, every month there will be one or two on-campus interview, with about 15 applicants. The interviewees vary every time depending on which professor are assigned to interview. The final decision are made by the committee. Besides, as far as I know, the questions vary as well. But the typical questions are why now? why mba? why Judge and your career plan.

I believe the new director attracts more people to apply, but i dont know the exact number. However, What I believe more is that the impact of the new director will expose in later years not this year due to his short time on duty till now.

Every year, there is about 10 or so chinese students, some of whom go back to china coz they are sponsored by the companies. Others' jobs are not bad as well. But again, it depends on the previous experience.

Sorry for short response because i have too many cases to do this term. Good luck to everyone and hope see you in JBS.

Yes, we celebrated it this morning! A big jump

If you cannot manage to come, ask Jo to make it in Beijing. Every year, the mba interviewees conduct some  interviews in China, perhaps in April.

Anyway, face-to-face interview is better. good luck!

Actually I think the distinctive of JBS is its innovation and Entrepreneurship, not management consulting, that is INSEAD.

Search "Enterprise Tuesday", you will get some ideas about entreperneurship, networking, business idea & creation competition.

Innovation is the heart of JBS curriculum, we have a series of core and electives about innovation. Last week, we just finished a two-day creativity workshop, which was jointly held by JBS and Satchi&Satchi.

We have three main projects, namely "Cambridge Venture Project", "Global consulting project" & "Individual project", which are throughout the whole year, to help us appy the knowledge into the real world. Maybe such curriculum is not unique since each school has similar one, but it is actually a big opportunity for us.

Hi Liusha

I am invited to have on-campus interview on 12 Mar, while there is alternative offer to have interview in Beijing on 21 Mar. Do you think there is preference given to candidates going to cambridge?  From the website, it mentions that preference will be given to those candidates. When I asked for details from the officer in email, he said there is no any preference actually. It's the same for candidates having interview in Cambridge and Beijing. Would like to seek for your advice.

Thank you!

作者: 流沙    时间: 2007-2-6 04:02

Yes, the whole tuition fee should be paid just before the program starts.

As far as I know, there is no preference between beijing interview and on-campus interview since majority of chinese has interview in Beijing. Regarding the prefrence, I think there is difference between on-campus and tele interview.

Good luck!

yes, the companies are contacted by the school. This year, we have about 40 projects even though we only have about 22 groups. Most of them are big names, such as microsoft, cisco, pfizer, BT, sony ericsson, capgemini, UBC, JP morgan, Global fund, WHO, HP, IBM ...

The selection of the company is nothing with the nation. You just need to form a team and probably bid for the project if there is competition. BTW, it is compulsory to everyone.

Hi, I met Jo today and asked about the exact number of Chinese application being admitted. She said not quite a few since it is still a little bit early. Currently, there are some interviews conducting in Beijing.

Regarding IB and Consulting, I didn't hear such kind of messages. Since I haven't compared both schools before and now, it is difficult for me to say. But some chinese do have interview in this stage. The point is that most of position open to Chinese is going back to China considering the emerging china market and the language issues of chinese.

cambridge has a lot of vcs, such as 3i, cambridge angel and library house. However, bear in mind that getting investment needs really hardworking and solid networking even though Cambridge does provide a lot of opportunities for entrepreneurs to connect with VCs.

If you viewed website of JBS, you will find several MBAs started their own business in cambridge sucessfully. As far as I know, there are about 5 (at least) starting business immediately after MBA. But I am not sure whether they contacted VC or not.

Here we have business idea competition, business creation competition as well as VC competition. If your project is good enough, dont worry too much about money in my opionion.

1.  I heard from the web(http://baike.baidu.com/view/13714.htm) that “剑桥大学向来是以考试制度严格而闻名的,每科课程只考一次,没有补考的机会,考试如果未获通过,其结果只有离开剑桥。” Is it same as MBA?

2.   How to test each course? close-book test ,or open-book test, or submitting paper only?

Thanks a lot.

1。oxbridge MBA
5。印度人的比例是多少 (funny Q but it does matter)

Thanks in advance and really appreciate your info

Indians are flooding everywhere (sorry, no offensive, in case any indian readers here). INSEAD singapore does have many indians but definitely not majority. "Many indians" because singapore has a lot of indians (residence, students, migrated families etc), but they are not majority in INSEAD because the school wont allow any nationalities to exceed 12% of the class population. and I didnt see many when I visited the school in Singapore.

just my 2cents

Hi,

Just went through this wonderful Q&A area, very helpful.

Here comes my background, could any "helper" give any comments?

BSc in China, top engineering institution;

MSc in UK, Cass Business School;

Working experience, 3 yrs in a Big 4 Shanghai office, focus on Finance services industry.

I am thinking about going to Judge, Said or LBS for the MBA study. Based on your experience, what do I need to improve to secure the offer in those schools?  Thx a lot~~

Hi Liusha

I am supposed to apply 2008 JBS MBA and I need your advice.

Here is my background : UK msc finance&management from University of Exeter.

3 year working expereince; Now I am wokring in a top 500 company. But most candidate and current MBA students have 6 years (average) or more working expereince. It is my big concern.

How is JBS' finance perspective compared with Said?
