It will be better if you could list two parts of the comparison. One part is: civilization, so the counterpart should be a noun, not a sentence.

比较是很复杂，我做题的方法是先看比较的部分是主语，还是其他部分。一般主语比较要在than 之后补出谓语动词，这样不会造成歧义。

回到题中885 sec 3-24 比较的是宾语，如果补出was 但不知道was 是什么成分。

170 中虽然making the construction industry’s economic health much more robust than five years ago 做伴随状语但比较的含义是 the contruction industry's economic health( is )much more robust than it was five years ago 所以比较的还是主语，要不出it was 再than 之后，才不会造成歧义。

以上是个人观点，没有得到牛牛们的认证，所以仅供参考。

2.compared with ‘thought, anticipate’
i.    一般不补  more .. than anticipated = more.. than (it was) anticipated

two subjects comparision
1.a noun is coompared with anouth noun
a.    不补… A better than B (a civilization a thousand years more ancient than the city)
2.a sentence is compared with anther sentence
a.    可补 A is doing something bettern than B does something.
b.     但很多情况下可省略各个重复成分, 甚至谓语

我觉着it恰恰是指代a rise. 这句话补全是: than it (即:a large rise) was (making the economic health robust) five years ago.
如果不加it was, 这句话就是than (the economic health ) five years ago.因为the economic health 前面已提及, 应被省略.

所以加it was更明确表明比较对象是a rise 而不是 economic health

不对的话, 大家批判!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

170中的it was是指economic health was，因为making的逻辑主语并不是a rise, 这种分词放在句末的结构中，分词是表示前面整个句子对后面的影响，请参考OG259。

TO les: 多谢提醒!!!! 仔细想了想, 认为自己错了. 不过原因是我的结论有逻辑错误:如果it 指代a rise in the coming year, 它不可能在五年前出现．MM举的例子非常好, 是典型的现在分词做结果壮语, 逻辑主语可看做前面的句子. 但我认为这里的making是伴随状语. boost 和make不是两个分离的动作, 如果说boost了十年, 十年后才使经济生机勃勃吗?我觉着是boost的同时,就使得经济蓬勃.

it 指代health ,是对抽象名词的指代，表示同一对象，因此必须标出同一对象在不同情况下的不同状况，这就需要谓语动词来表现。

如果是不同事物，就不用it，也不用补出谓语。

对于比较结构，自己也总结了一点，像上面这道题的结构，对于我来看是这样的：

a civilization (that is) a thousand years older than..

对于主系表结构， than 前面没有其他的内容时，than后面指需要补出主语即可；大家可以在大全例查一下，凡是这种结构，都是这样处理的。

对于第二个问题：XDF也有过总结，than不可以合时间状语直接连接，对于ten years ago这种类型的题，一定要加上it was；they were；

yup, one of the explainations of "civilization" in the Longman DICT is: a place such as a city where you feel comfortable, especially because it is modern.
e.g. After a week in the mountains all I wanted to do was get back to civilization.

I was also wondering whether it is logical to campare the civilization with the city, but it will be no prob if "civilization" means "city" here.

还是比较的东西要对等

A1 .. + 数字/倍数 + more than A2

A1 和 A2 要是可以比的东西，尽量补出谓语动词， be + 表语的情况，be 动词可以省略

than 后面的从句可以倒装

省略还有几种情况：than expected/anticipated/ever/before ...其他省略就要小心了。

还是用排除法来做比较快。

同意某亲开头所说的~

First of all, 拉出比较部分，确定比较成分的主谓。

Secondly，当比较对象的动作是相同的，但发生的时间不一样时，或同一事物的相同动作发生的时间不同时，应注意做出补足，且than或as从句补出的主动词的时态由时间装状语和句子大意决定。

Thirdly，应注意到than excpected /anticipated/ever/ before 等的特殊用法。

The rest，酌情考虑把。。。。

what 和it 并列不对吧，语法上what = the thing that, 后面就不应该再用it了。（thing就是每个句中不同的名词，这里就应该是eco. health），

单单是what was 5 years ago 听上去倒不错

从考试技巧来说：

404B错在fast不能修饰rate，C中用一个what it was很好地回避了该用什么adj来修饰rate的问题。

最根本的原则是：无歧义就能省就省；有歧义则该补就补

1、I am taller than he (is).    要省略（主句无宾语，主语比较很明确）

选C的话，句子就变成 than other cities do in the United States。最后的介词短语没有紧跟修饰对象，可能有问题。我想这也是大多数倒装的原因吧。

偶感觉哦~~如果have是做实意动词表拥有，有啊的时候，than后面就要补上do,did

偶觉得比较最难得就是判断比较对象是谁跟谁，如果判断出来了是n&n,还是v&v,还是句子&句子，就迎刃而解了~~偶还在这个地方纠结中。。。

18L和16L的解释相反呀（虽然答案一样），
16L说不是主语比较不用补，也就是说主语比较才补，
18L的第一个例子说 I am taller than he (is). 要省略（主句无宾语，主语比较很明确），这里是主语比较，怎么又省略了呢

想问大全404这题和这个170题的区别？404没有what就是错的，170没有what就是对的？

404. C 选项逻辑意思是比较，但是实际上不是一个比较句，而是一个【主系表】结构的句子，
twice 在这里是一个限定词，省略下就是the rate was what，不可能 the rate was it was in 1970's，
所以what 不能省略

170. 是一个宾语补语的比较句，需要补出主谓来表明是宾补比较，这里的主谓指的是宾语和宾语补足语之间的关系，不是主句主谓。
所以，what必须去掉。

这个帖子太好啦，忍不住要挖老帖回复下。尤其同义某楼大神说的，能省就省，有歧义就必须补。
现在看来，这种比较，介词宾语+宾语修饰词（补足语or定语）的题就非常清晰了。

这两题，其实都是比较的介词宾语，因为宾语都带有后置修饰语（宾补or小定从）
所以比直接比较介词滨云，宾语后面没有后置修饰语的，略复杂一些些

但其实，在宾语和修饰其实又是一套小的主谓结构，宾是主，谓语被省略
所以又可以当成是比较主语啦

按照常规，比较主语的话，要考虑主语B，会不会误认为和主语A以外的，其他名词（比如宾语，比如另外句子的主语）
老生常谈的，he like apple more than John 不加的话就容易歧义

而上面两题，非常关键的就在于，【than 后面的那个名词，也就是另外一个宾语+后置修饰语，宾语的是什么词！】
24题的，比较两个介宾+后置定语，前面是a civilization（was）1000year ···后面是the city （was）known
因为than后面用了具体名词！！the city！！所以比较清晰的，city和前面的civilization比较，city的谓语也是同civilization的谓语
都是was，而不太会将city，和开头的考古学家a···list比较，city的动词肯定也不是考古学家发出的cut或者uncover，
所以比较明显，不像he like apple more than John那样，说更喜欢苹果也行比John更喜欢苹果也行，都没违和感，不明显
所以根据原则，能省就省

而170题，之所以要补，【就是因为than 后面用了模糊的代词 it！！！】不是具体的名词，刚好前面又有a rise和health
it指代哪个都说得过去，所以非得加上was（health was much more···的was），而不用did来区别rise 的和他的动作starts

所以综上，这种不是比较两个简单介宾的，而是比较两个有后置定语的介宾的，
特别留意下，要不要给than后面的宾补上动词，就看宾语选的什么词，数量上和意义上，会不会和than前面那个介宾以外的其他名词有暧昧，清晰就不补，有歧义而且确实都说得通的歧义，就补。

还是大神总结的那句，能省就省，有歧义就必须补！
